A French Canadian holiday treat. I sure do miss my mothers cooking! I do recommend adding a small amount of garlic.
1 prepared pie crust, top and bottom.
1.5 lb. hamburger.
1 large onion (to taste).
2 to 3 medium potatoes, cooked, cooled and cubed (to taste).
½ tsp. poultry seasoning (optional).
Salt and pepper (to taste).
In a large stock pot, combine hamburger, onion and seasoning. Add enough water to cover and bring to a boil. Simmer at least 30 minutes, stirring often.
While meat is cooking, put pie crust into an 8-inch ungreased pan.
When meat is browned and onions thoroughly cooked, add cubed potatoes.
When potatoes are warmed, use a slotted spoon to fill pie crust with meat mixture and a small amount of broth.
Cover with pie crust top and seal with cool water and a fork. Poke holes in the top of completed pie to let steam escape.
Bake at 425 degrees for about 30 minutes or until pie crust is golden brown.
Optional ingredients for a traditional meat pie include:
Substitute ½ lb of beef with ½ lb of pork.
Add garlic, celery, carrot, dates, currants, cloves or ginger.
Top crust can be brushed with egg or milk before baking for a golden crust.
