Town Fires Four Workers for Gossiping

ABC News
(May 22)—What happened in the town of Hooksett, N.H., is no rumor.

Four town employees with 46 years of service between them were fired, in part for gossiping and discussing rumors of an improper relationship between the town administrator and another employee that Hooksett residents now agree were not true.

The administrator complained, and after an investigation the town council fired the women, finding, "Gossip, whispering, and an unfriendly environment are causing poor morale and interfering with the efficient performance of town business."

"When I was given my termination papers, I just looked at the gentlemen that were present in the room and I said, 'You've got to be kidding!'" said fired worker Sandy Piper, who insisted her comments weren't out of line. "We discussed it on a lunch break, and then it ended."

"It kind of sort of was, 'Oh did you hear that too,'" said Michelle Bonsteel, Piper's fired co-worker.

Gossip is ingrained in American culture, from the elementary school playground to the office water cooler. But Tory Johnson, "Good Morning America's" workplace contributor, said people should be careful about what they say when they're on the clock.

"Free speech only goes so far," Johnson said. "An employer definitely has the right to defend his reputation."

In Hooksett the four firings are ironically now the talk of the town. But for the women out of work, the controversy is not a matter of idle chatter -- they want to get back to work.

"I did love my job. And do I want to return? Absolutely," Piper said.

Lawyers for the Town Council of Hooksett told ABC News they have "no comment" at this time, but there could be a decision this week on whether to reinstate some or all of the women.

A hotbed of social disobedience...

...in the homeland of liberal tolerance? I can't believe the city didn't stand up for the progressive rights of free speech. No, wait. That's a conservative trait to stand up for the Constitution. Now I'm confused.

That's sounds like they wanted to make an example out of someone... or they been wanting to fire those people just didn't have reason too :coffee:

HEY.. I helped built the playground in that town!!!

Not that that has anything to do with anything else..

Southern NH USED to be a Conservative Mecca, then all the m#######s moved in.. biggest Rifle range in the state was in Hooksett, it's gone.

Good!!! I saw them on a morning show today. They admittedly gossiped publicly about an "inappropriate" relationship between two co-workers and ALSO admitted they were wrong. That kind of sh*t gets people in trouble at home and professionally and they SHOULD be fired. Maybe somebody will learn from it. Gossip at home- fine if you have to...gossip at work is no good.

It's worst in Nashua where I grew up.... but then again... Mass developers own 75% of the commercial property.

This situation is no different than a sexual harassment case. The gentleman turned in a grievance as he should have and allowed the council to investigate and handle the situation legally and CONSTITUTIONALLY. He probably could and should sue them for libel also.

I believe in order to constitute it as libel it has to be in print or published. It sounds like these girls just got chatty during a lunch break. Not really on company time/"on the clock" either if they were at lunch (shade of grey??). I'm not for the gossiping and generally avoid the gossipy folks here at work and walk away when stuff gets juicy and I'm in earshot. But it is everywhere and practically in every work environment

Hooksett would be considered Manchester to some.. actually probably everyone that didn't live in Manchester.

Rileys used to have a range onsite in Hooksett, think it went to 1/4 mile shooting lanes. we shot our Olympic trials there for the state team.

Manchester had an indoor pistol range that was real busy, and a few indoor shooting clubs.

I was a member of a club in Derry that would meet and shoot downstairs in the meeting room of the American Legion. Not a range, just a normal everyday meeting room with target traps rolled out on one end of the room.

Maybe St. Mary's County employees should take notice. I'm not sure we'd have many left if the gossips were fired. :coffee:
