tracfone

Anyone else having issues with a sim based tracfone in lex park area right now?

My home phone is out right now, cause the local phone lines were stuck by lightning and the housing complex is fighting with verizon over who should fix it. So I went to use my tracfone, which I usually only use on trips, and it gives me a "sim not registered" message. I used it one week ago while in annapollis and it worked fine. The phone still shows me having 246 minutes which are good until Feb 2008, and it shows a signal as being detected, but it wont allow me to make calls. I also drove down near my office where the phones do work and it still gives the same message. So its not just the tower near my house.

Also, their technical support are a bunch of idiots. Im not conviced the guy I talked to has ever even seen a cell phone, let alone could help anyone to solve a technical issue with one. Not to mention that he kept asking me the same things over and over to the point that it seemed like he was specifically trying to tick me off so I would hang up. How many times to I need to verify my sim serial number before he realizes its not going to magically change. 5, 10. How about 12 times saying and verifiying the same number. Not to mention asking me my name and address over and over several times.

i used to work for Cingular for 7yrs. Heres what should work. Take the sim card out for about 5 minutes, then put it back in. Then turn the phone on. This is almost the same technique we used for cycling the battery. It ll take a few moments then it should pick up the same signal it had before. If not..what carrier does it say on the screen? Call them and find the nearest location to see if they can give you a one time free courtesy sim card, if they dont some stores charge between $15-25 for one. Let me know what happens

Removing the sim card for 5 minutes did not work, but thanks anyways. The phone just says tracfone when I turn it on. I think they have a deal to use the towers of most major carriers. I just find it weird that it stopped working at almost the same time as my home phone went out. It wasn't plugged in when the lightning hit and was not even turned on.

Have you tried turning the phone off for 30 minutes or so?

The phone was turned off all night. They are suppose to send me a new sim card, but that doesn't help me now. I currently have no phone at home and will have no phone for my trip to PA this next week. I guess I survived for 35 years without a cell phone, so its not really that big a deal. I just hate paying for things that dont work.

Walmart has the go phones for $30 and they come with a $10 card. Not a bad deal at all. If you go to a retail store to buy one the cheapest one they have is $50. Thats the route I would take while your going out of town. At least you d have a lil peace of mind that way. Then when your sim card arrives sell the new phone you brought, for like 10-15 on the classfieds section here.
