Training Wheels

The boy wants a bigger bike, but still not ready without training wheels.

The bigger bikes tend not to have them - has anyone had any luck putting training wheels on bikes not already equipped with them? I see them on the shelves, but they make no guarantee what bikes they'll work with.

It may be worth putting a call into Mikes Bikes on GM Road.

But I thought more often than not, they were mostly universal, and you should only have to remove the nuts off the back tire and they should fit right on...

Obviously eye check them in the store with the bike if you can, or maybe get a measurement of how long they need to be.

Or, tell him that he gets a bigger bike when he can ride without training wheels. I've learned that the smaller bikes are MUCH better to train with than the larger ones. The center of gravity is lower, and more stable.

I taught both of my kids (and a couple of friends kids) on 16" bikes, and they got on a 20", and took off.

How old is your boy? I have 6 year olds that are just learning. Each have a 16" bike and they came with training wheels. The 6 year olds are tall for their age, each over 4 foot, and the 16" bike is still plenty tall enough for them. If he's much older, you should really get him riding without the training wheels on the smaller bike, then move up to the larger one. I think he'll find it more difficult learning without the training wheels on a larger bike where he may/may not be able to reach the ground easily when first learning.

Just my suggestion. Good luck.

How old is your son and what size bike are you looking to get?

Thanks. His birthday was a week ago, so he got the bike he wanted. It's a little big for him, and he seems to have accepted that he will have to learn balance on the little one for now.

we took off the training wheels at about 4 in the afternoon, after a couple of small should off to the races. the next day he went on a ride with the neighbors, then with his dad. His big sister decided it was time for him to learn.
