Transferring VHS video to DVD bleg

I have some VHS tapes containing old home movie type stuff that a friend has asked me to transfer to DVDs for them. I think I may have done something like this a long time ago, but I don't recall how I did it.

Does anyone have suggestions about the easiest way to do it? Some software you'd recommend? I have a Windows machine running 7 with a DVD writer that I can use. The resulting DVDs need to play in stand alone DVD players. (Not worried about the +/- disc issue.)
