My truck started cutting off when coming to a stop. Didn't happen all the time, very random. No notice, no lights, nothing.

Took it to get looked at. They tried to replace the I.C. motor, and that made it worse so they took the motor off. They say they have done all the can and recommend taking it to a transmission shop. Has anyone have any experience with this type of problem? Any recommendations of a shop to use? TIA.

In my experience with car troubles I have found that if you have the problem someone else has had it as well. I have diagnosed many an issue with my vehichle and saved a ton of money just searching on the net. Just go to your search engine and type in 1999 "Hunk of Junk" (whatever you are driving) and what the problem is and you may just get a hit. Good luck.

Thank you. I did search a little (I'm at work). Most of the stuff they said to check, the mechanic says he doesn't think it's that problem. I will try to do a little more research at home.

I'm not an auto transmission person, but if a mechanic told me my transmission was causing my engine to stall, I'd try a different mechanic

If the torque converter malfunctions it can cause the clutch shoes not to release. This will cause the engine to stall at idle because the torque converter will not release, forcing the engine to stall. This condition will usually start to occur after long a drive on the freeway and get worse from there. If your car shutters as it is coming to a stop and then stalls you could have this problem. If you are coming to a stop and you think this is your problem try putting the car into neutral gear and see if it still stalls. If the engine does not stall when in neutral the torque converter has failed and needs replacing.

Could very well be the converter, use to race in my younger days and we would experiment how difference size converters would effect how high the "stall" would be.

Converter or a leaky vacuum line are pretty good bets.

This is probably not your issue, but I had a similar problem on an '89 Mazda B2200. Just all of a sudden, whenever I came to a stop, it would quit. Worked fine if I kept the RPM up and while I was driving, but would stall as soon as I took my foot off the gas. After days of looking, I finally found a shorted wire under the air cleaner which blew a fuse. The wire was to an anti-stall solenoid on the carb. With the fuse blown, the solenoid would not work and would let the RPM drop way below the stall threshold. Fixed the wire, replaced the fuse and all was well with the world.

First time that happened on the wife's T-bird and the guy said xmission, I thought the same thing. Well it was, I forget exactly what, but it happened twice to that car. 94 T-bird.

My friends brother was the mechanic that looked at it. He mentioned to her last night torque converter. I'm guessing this is an expensive fix even if caught early. It does not shutter when coming to a stop. I do have to put it in neutral when slowing down so it doesn't stall.

Well, you have to pull the transmission to get to the torque converter.

Check your PMs.

My transmission guy is great.

That is different. In this case, the subject torque converter is of the 'lock-up' variety with hydraulically actuated internal multi-disk clutch assembly; said actuation controlled by an electric solenoid.

The stall you are tallking about with the older convertors is the speed at which rotating 'stall' occurs, 'connecting', via fluid dynammics, the rotor and stator within the converter.

I have a 2000 Expedition, 4-wheel drive V8. I know fixing it is cheaper than getting another vehicle but that doesn't make it suck any less,. I feel like it's always something with this truck.

PM Huntr1 and get the info on his transmission guy. If it is the torque converter it would be better to get it fixed now before it possibly takes out the entire transmission.

someone mentioned it.. vacuum lines... you could take a quick look under the hood, especially around the intake/throttle body area, to see if any lines are loose or came off. the mechanic should have caught that though

Well, got the truck looked at by a transmission place. He called today and said it's definitely the xmission. Once he gets in there it'll either just be replacing the torque converter or rebuild the transmission. Either way I'm :nomoney:. Ugh!!!!

Ok, new guy that looked at it said he believes a valve body ?? has gone bad. The truck is not showing classic symptoms for a bad torque converter. Hopefully he's right. This will be a much cheaper fix.
