Travel Ideas Needed

So we are going to see Grandma in July - it's a long drive - any suggestions on how to entertain the kiddos? My Mini van does have a DVD player so I've got that covered - but I'm not sure I can show 8 hours of movies....suggestions? My kids are toddlers - almost 2 and almost 3.

Leapster, coloring books, alphabet writing books (3 yr. old to trace), my little one likes to play with his matchbox cars. You could also try the books with cd's, so they could look at the pages as it reads the cd.

:yeahthat: and you'll need to stop a few times so they can burn a little energy. McD's Playland worked for mine. Just let them run around and play for a half an hour. I have done this a few times. At 2 and 3 they still sleep alot in the car. We also tried to travel at night to avoid traffic and because the kids slept the whole ride.

drive overnight, they'll sleep the entire time and when you get there Grandma can babysit while you catch some ZZZ's. That's what hubby and I use to do on the trip to Jacksonville FL

Tinkerbell presents. Wrap them up little travel gifts, then pop them out and say "Tinkerbell brought you a gift!" and keep doing it through out the drive.

Cookie sheets with a rim make a great "desk" for drawing and writing...and for holding some new fun magnets. Stickers, postcards to send back home (get your stamps now), new fat crayons, a couple of new matchbox cars, little "stained glass" coloring books (Amazon has these), and don't forget tape to stick them on the windows. Write their name for them on whatever they create, tell them they can give it to grandma when they see her.

Have all this stuff in a bag they can't see in, and take out something new every few hours.

Stop often for a diaper change and a run around! I know that will add a couple hours to your trip, but it will make the trip more pleasant. And a good heavy lunch will make for a longer nap time.

Goldfish, dried fruit, sippy cups for water. If you can't reach them easily from the front, whoever is not driving should sit in the back with them. They get a real kick out of that!

I used to get my kids those markers that only write on certain paper so they couldn't mark up my car. These were a big hit! Get some of those chunky books for kids, if you have a BJ's membership they have tons of those books. I used to have tons of great ideas, but my kids are much older now and I can just hook up their video game to the car and they also bring their laptop and DS Lite's. So they are easier to entertain. Wish I could help more. :howdy:

I love the magnet idea, that sounds like a winner!

Geek your idea is cute too, but could get expensive!

There are some great ideas you have shared. Thank you. I usually look ahead at McDonalds online and print out the play ones before we leave - it's wonderful to let them play awhile.

We are leaving pre-dawn, so hopefully they will sleep a few hours and we get get a head start. Hubby doesn't want to drive all night - but 3 - 4am start is fine.

Once we get there Grandma will be completely wound up - since instead of staying at her house, she got us rooms in a lake resort town an hour north of her home. It will be so much easier that way, a beach, playground and a nearby amusement park.

Should be fun!

We are leaving wed am to ct with 5 children. We have teh dve player, and they color. We also pack a lunch and do a picnic at a rest area with tables, bathrooms and room to run. Saves money, and aggervation of Mcd's lol. Plus i am not a fan of Mcd's. Anyway have a good trip!

Try some word games and songs with them--B is for Blue sky, and button and ...They are young, but you can't start too young with literacy. Think about it, you have the gift of having the total attention , and they of yours for 8 hours! It is a wonderful gift. Enjoy their stories, tell them some of yours, read to them. A movie or 2 is good at naptime, but I do have a problem just plugging them in to keep them quiet.

I don't have any more tips to add, they're all great!

We took the kids to NC for Christmas (7 hrs). I was nervous that it'd be a miserable drive, but it was great! The kids did sooooo much better than I ever thought they would.
