Treats for the grain allergic?

I've switched the baby boy up to sweet potato and duck food due to his grain allergy. However,he was still itching and licking. I've now figured out, after reading the bag...that greenies are based with wheat. I guess that 's not a stretch, but I just never thought of it.

NowI've read every bag at the store and they are ALL grain based....even jerky chews!:geek:

Anyone have suggestions for healthy, non-grain treats? he'll munch a carrot, but not like a biscuit!

Thanks for the help...here's where I've been confused: I was thinking grain allergy as in all grains. he seems to be bothered by all these to some degree. These recipes substitute one grain for another.

I have made some frozed treats with plain yogurt, berries and mashed bananas and honey, which he loves, but smears all over the house.:killingme
Buckwheat not a grain...while many people think that buckwheat is a cereal grain, it is actually a fruit seed that is related to rhubarb and sorrel making it a suitable substitute for grains for people/pets who are sensitive to wheat or other grains that contain protein glutens. :)

You can find it in any natural food store (Arrowhead Mills use to be a great brand); even some grocery stores carry buckwheat flour!

What about soy or rice flour?

Good luck!

We have a spa visit (vet appt) on Wed to find out exactly what grains, but this info is an excellent start. Thanks again!

Catt...thanks for the EVO tp...will pick some up as well!

Which brand are you feeding? Some brands still have grains in their potato/duck formulas (though you've probably already read the ingredient list).

And someone I know takes canned food (the same brand and type as the dry) and makes little "meatballs" (just roll it into balls) with them. She keeps them in the fridge so they stay semi-firm. I always just use pieces of kibble as treats, but guess you're looking for "special" treat ideas.

It's natural balance allergy formula.

Actually, what I'd like is something to keep him BUSY. I make him little treats to snack on, but they disappear quick. He gets bored with rawhide. I have been putting organic peanut butter in his kongs and that works pretty well, but he's a chewer. The greenies and such were great for that, but full of wheat and I was forever coating his paws with bag balm.

new balance also makes dog treats they are on the same isle as the dog bones if i am thinking correctly on the right side bottom shelf. They make duck and sweet potatoe and chicken and sweet potatoe and fish and sweet potatoe. How do i know this . I also have a dog who has grain allergies and that is what she eats. The new balance treats are extremely hard so i have to break them in half for her to be able to eat it even though they are small.

I also went to petco and bought her dogtreats that are dehydrated chicken that she had before and loved them.

I also got these things at petco called busy bones and they have what looks to be like meat or something in the middle of it but they stink they are on teh same isle as the dog food in bj's and they kept bruno busy for about 30min lastnight.

Where to purchase? TIA!:howdy:

I get them at Nicks, but the food stores usually have them. Don't cook them. Just refrigerate or freeze them for the next day.

Peppers also has a selection of stuffed marrow bones (cheaper than Petco by $2-$3). We got the huge knuckle bones for the Boxers and they love them! With all "cooked" bones, watch for weakness or breakage and then toss the bone and get a new one.

Rawhide isn't very good for dogs.

my vet also did say not to give the dog real bones and that is what the marrow bone is due to it splintering. She said rawhide is the way to go. Now they make these things called rawhide chips and bruno loves them too. she hates the rawhides with the knots on each end she leaves the knots and eats the middle.

Now I'm confused! To bone or not to bone....that is the question!:cds:

I'll check with my vet tomorrow and get back with her opinion as well.
