Tri-County Shelter & Pit Bulls--What Gives??

Along with being a "lab lover," we're also huge pit lovers. We used to foster for It's The Pit's Rescue in San Diego, CA and we're strong believers in the breed (as long as they are raise right--with love, nurturing and taught to assume their place in the pack). Our oldest dog is lab/great dane/pit bull and he's been my best friend for 7 years.

So why does Tri-county not adopt pits out (unless given directly to a rescue)? It breaks my heart to see them in there, stamped "NOT FOR ADOPTION"

But the ignorance towards the breed ticks me off even more.

Sorry for such an aggravated post first thing on a Saturday, but I'm just looking for an answer/justification. :boxing:

They are considered a "dangerous" breed, I guess. They are euthanized if the rescues don't take them. I do know the shelter will hold certain dogs for longer periods if they think they are exceptional in temperment.
The rescues will take the time to assure that they are going to good homes and not being used for the wrong reasons. The shelter has no way of knowing if they are going to a good home or will be used to fight.
If you are looking to foster, there are many local rescue groups that you may want to contact.

Unfortunately with a 10 month old, we're not in the position to foster--maybe over the summer? But I was just surprised, I've never lived in an area where they have euthanized/restricted the adoption of a certain breed. So sad.

For them it has very little to do with ignorance and everything to do with liability. They cannot screen like rescues do and they are likely afraid of sending them to the... 'wrong' homes...

Consider the position they are in.

You also have to take into consideration that tri-county doesn't have the ability to take the time to make sure that whoever is getting one of the bully breeds isn't getting it for the wrong reason. I'm purely speculating, but I could see a-holes that fight pits using the pound to get dogs to use to train their dogs on.

You could always contact one of the rescue groups in the area to see if they would help in acquiring the dog. Just a thought.

I think I saw that pit. It was very sweet.

Ok, end of discussion for me. Just because some pits out there are rampantly abused and used for fighting and thus end up violently attacking others does not mean the entire breed is tainted. /end.

Tri County Animal Shelter is operated by the Local Government. Their Insurance doesn't cover them should a Pit Bull attack. No..they don't put them down, they save them for Pit Rerscues to get them IF they are presumed friendly.

don't worry yourself about Baja, he seems to fixate on things he knows nothing about but can Google! He likes to :duel: and :elaine: and push the bad bully breed dog reputation for everyone to see in the dog threads. Yet, to my knowledge he doesn’t even have a dog.

There are MANY of us on here that know not all bully breed pups are bad pups! We just choose to ignore the ignorant and refuse to post back to them. :flowers:

haha, thanks for the update :) gotta love those googlers!

still no news on Hemi pup :/ thinking he's adopted a new family as his own :(

I know it's a little fast to move on--but know of any (decently priced) breeders around? We have already discussed that should Hemi come home, we are ok with having 2 GSDs...

Years ago, I read an article about "Dangerous Dogs", and Dalmations were at the top of the list! I have to admit, being a Retired Paramedic, and seeing some very gruesome Dog Bites, until recently..I was scared to death of Pitts, and Doberman's. I know everyone gets sick of hearing "It's not the Dog, it's the owners", but it is SO true! Any Dog Breed is capable of attacking, look at some of the Chihuaua's. The only reason you don't hear of Chi attacks, is because they're so small, and the damage they can cause is less severe!

I'm pretty sure the older lady that owned the pitbull that attacked my dog, on my property, TWICE wasn't abusing it or fighting with it. It was just a nasty, nasty pitbull. Thank god the one time it came after me, I was able to escape it, or that might very well be my pictures you are googleing. Not so lucky for the two cats it killed as well.

For those reasons, I will never own a pitbull. I don't care if your ppitbull is the sweetest dog to ever walk the face of the earth, keep it away from me and my family, I want no parts of it.

And yes, as a dog lover and owner, I know ALL dogs are capable of biting. I just choose to have dogs that aren't capable of killing a grown man.

I do believe labs and GS are high on the list as well. I know a little boy that was attacked by a dalmatian. I heard labs are high on the list just because of sheer number of labs there are with the over breeding of the breed in general. I would still choose a lab or GS over a pitbull, rot or dalmatian anyday.
