At 12:30am Dec 2 (Tues) EST hackers hijacked the Web site CheckFree.com,
one of the largest online bill payment companies, redirecting an unknown
number of visitors to a Web address from the Ukraine that tried to
install malicious software on visitors' computers, until the company
regained control of the site at 5am EST. "...analysis of the malware
indicates that it is a new strain of Trojan horse program designed to
steal user names and passwords." US Bank was also affected. It appears
that the hackers did not breach the company's account credentials (did
not steal names and passwords wholesale). The indication is that anyone
who paid a bill to any of the companies below online during that
night/early morning time period is at risk. Although this is a very low
traffic time frame, customers of these companies should be aware.
Changing passwords is always a simple, prudent measure.
