(GRANTSVILLE, MD) – A Maryland state trooper arrested a man early today who pointed a rifle at him after the trooper spotted him near a home where the occupant had been receiving threatening phone calls.

The suspect is identified as Edward E. Lukas, 45, of Grantsville, Md. He is charged with first degree assault, second degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence and reckless endangerment. He is in the Garrett County Detention Center awaiting his initial appearance before a court commissioner.

The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 12:00 a.m. today, a man called the McHenry Barrack and reported he had been receiving phone calls and messages from someone threatening to harm him and his family. A trooper responded to the man’s residence in the 5700-block of Amish Road in Grantsville.

Upon arriving near the scene, the trooper spotted someone at the edge of a nearby woods along Amish Road. The trooper identified himself and ordered the person to identify himself and walk toward him. Instead of complying, the man, later identified as Lukas, jumped into a ditch and then came up out of the ditch with a rifle pointed at the trooper.

The trooper ordered Lukas to drop the rifle and surrender. Instead of complying, Lukas turned and began walking away from the trooper. After repeated commands, Lukas dropped the rifle, surrendered and was arrested by the trooper without further incident. The trooper recovered a Marlin rifle, loaded with more than one dozen rounds of ammunition.

Investigators from the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division have responded to assist with the ongoing investigation. At this time, it has not been established if this suspect was the one making threats to the homeowner, or what the motive behind the threats being made may have been. Troopers will also be applying for an extreme risk protective order for the suspect.
