Troublesome fleas

Foxhound

Finishing last
I have both a dog and a cat. My poor K9 is allergic to their bite. The last few years I have had the hardest time killing them, frontline, advantix, advantage all seem to have little effect. Anybody have any good ideas. The cat seems to be a commuter system as he comes and goes as he please. The fleas seem not to bother him though. I know he has them. I have carpet/furniture spray, Have been vacuuming regularly, washing bedding in hot regularly and now I am flea bathing the dog frequently. It seems to have started to help, but want to be proactive. Is there a new topical out there that may be better for these critters.

my dog was allergic too. he had to take steroids because he would loose his hair. You can give your pup capstar as a quick fix, its a pill you get from the vet and it kills the fleas within hours. We use Vectra 3D for our current dogs....so far so good!

Fleas can cause all kinds of problems with the Dog, and the Cat. As Posted above, the Vectra 3-D is wonderful for the Dog, and Revolution is good for the cat. Make sure the animals don't get wet for about 2 days after application. Get the Large Flea Collars from the Dollar Store, cut the clasp off & discard. Cut the collar in to 2" pieces, and place one in the Vaccum Bag. Put the other's in Zip-Locks for future use, Borax can be found in the Detergent section, and can be sprinkled on the Carpet. Dawn Dish Liquid kills Fleas, but only for a day, or two. Treat the Yard if possible, and Crawl Space. If you decide to bomb the house, don't forget the Attic, and the Garage. Good Luck. I suspect this will be a terrible year for Bugs, because of the warm weather we've had.

be careful with it... due to the ingredients ... it is harmful to the cat.

if the cat and dog enjoy each other.. and are buddies... it could be a bad mix.

Foxhound,
We carry the capstar which; as Dawn said; is a quick fix and does not have residual effects. A follow up with a spot on treatment would be recommended- we do carry Spectrasure; which the active ingredient is Fipronil. A vet has been telling people to apply spot ons every three weeks instead of 4 since the fleas and ticks are so bad already this year. Fipronil is the active ingredient in Frontline and we have sold plenty of it at our Solomons store and not one person has come back to say it hasn't worked.

Is there a possiblity of keeping the cat strictly indoors? If he is roaming the hood; no matter how good your efforts are to control what's in your yard- he could be bringing them back in. Do you have neighbors close by with dogs esp outside *lawn ornaments*? Again, every outside effort could be undone with that scenerio.

Another option: Diatomateous earth is available at feed stores in large containers and is safer to use in the yard than pesticides. DO NOT use the DE found for pool filters. Read the directions before using ON the animals to make sure it is safe. Use with caution as it is a very fine powder and is not good to inhale. Indoors, it can also burn up your vacuum cleaner motor because it is so fine.
Also, a cheap flea comb may work wonders on your cat; provided he will let you comb him without tearing you up! Keep a dish of soapy (Dawn) water handy and a paper towel. When you get a flea, dunk it in the water- after about 5 to 10 seconds it should be dead, wipe off comb and repeat.
Now, it's time for coffee....:coffee:

I have heard Vectra 3D works well.
PPP in Solomons just started carrying the Capstar for $10 ea. Currently, we only have the pills for dogs and cats under 25 lbs but are hoping for a shipment of the other later today.

the cat is afraid of the dog she spends all of her time in my bedroom where the dog isn't allowed.

:yay:.... talked to many that I have come in contact with...works well... only down side is .. it does have a lot of liquid to apply.

I have all small dogs and it didnt seem like anymore than frontline...but maybe I am just so used to it....LOL because my pups have been on Vectra 3D for awhile! And as I said before so far so good! I have had to pull three ticks off so far, but none were embedded in their skin! :yahoo: ..... and not to mention we live on 6 wooded acres so we are going to have ticks no matter what!!!!

I once tried; I think it was Hartz Flea powder in an aerosol can.
Acording to the instructions, you could spray this on your pets, or on a brush and brush it through their fur. It wasn't a cure all, but it did help.
