True Value Bankruptcy

Hey @TPD , how will this affect your store?
That’s a good question- we just got the email early this morning. It should be a smooth transition to Do It Best unless we decide to go with another supplier like Ace.

I've never heard of Do It Best. Maybe you should hook up with Menards. I hear they carry EVERYTHING.

I think Menards is still affiliated with a wholesaler like Ace or TV - don’t think they have their own private label. But I could be wrong - have never been in one.

Story says, "True Value retail stores, which are independently owned and operated, are not part of the bankruptcy, and the wholesaler said it will continue to supply products to those 4,500 locations." Does this mean until the bankruptcy process is over, or will they continue to supply even after?

Will you still be allowed to keep the name TrueValue on your store front after the bankruptcy? And no no no no no no no. Please please do not become an Ace. IMHO ~ They are nothing more than a smaller Walmart-esk China-mart. The one in Lusby appears more of a craft supply shop for women than anything else.

I've never either, but family has been to the one over in Morgantown, WV. One said it was Tractor Supply on steroids. I joking asked if they carry groceries. He laughed and said no, but they have a big frozen food section. Your building is definitely big enough.

Sorry to kinda hijack the thread a bit, though related, a bit .......

Went to the Lusby Ace one day in the hopes of saving a trip to Lowes. Needed a simple pine board for a shelf, 5'x12"x1/2". They wanted $44 and change! WTF! So off to Lowes and got the same pine board, a 6 footer had to cut down to 5, for under $20. Even with the gas used, still saved money.

Oh yeah. As some may know, Sneads, after greasing the proper palms, (opinion), is going to have an Ace store built in Prince Frederick, as part of the Armory Square development where they will be an "Anchor store!", where the school used to be. What's crazy, they will not be stocking any wood or lumber! Now, if people in Calvert recall, everyone was bellyaching, like in forever, about wanting a place like Lowes or Home Depot in Calvert. Instead they are getting another Ace, that won't be selling any lumber! UFB.

We haven’t been told much. I would hope Do It Best keeps the True Value name since it is iconic. Luckily for me, True Value is not in my business name (Ridge Hardware) so it won’t be a big deal for rebranding if we have to. We have one True Value sign outside. Some signage inside but can probably have those removed in less than an hour. Most hardware stores use the brand name in their business name - not sure how I was smart enough not to.

Yeah, they do that in Leonardtown too. No lumber, but if you need a sweatshirt or BBQ apron or a set of little ceramic owls that fit inside each other like Russian dolls, then that's the hardware store for you!

They do, their color is green. They just built a store in my hometown, it's bigger than the Lowes and Home Depot. Not quite sure how a town of 10k people can support all three but it's great for choice.

It's basically Lowes/Home Depot with a small food section. Their prices are better too. There is also a Rural King in Morgantown.

Most Ace hardware stores I've seen don't sell lumber. What they do have is better quality plumbing fittings etc than what Lowes and HD sell. Their tool selection was always a little lacking, but if you needed a specific drill bit, nail, screw etc it was the place to go. They even sold nails like produce, $x.xx/lb.

I like going to a true old fashioned hardware store such as the one in Prince Frederick, Lusby Hardware. I believe they still sell nails by the pound, you pic'em and paper bag'em.

I love a good locally owned hardware store and avoid corporate big box when possible. We have two really good ones here that I love to browse in because they have so many cool things and the employees know what they're talking about. I remember when Lowes had people who could advise you on your project, but now they're all just warm bodies with a pulse who can't even tell you where stuff is.

But I'm probably the only person in the world who is an experience shopper rather than just a price shopper. Lowes may have it cheaper, but Half Hitch has all kinds of doodads to browse through and the folks that work there are really nice and extremely helpful. I can say to them "here's my problem" and they'll point me in the right direction. Even if they don't sell or provide it at the store, they have the hookup and can tell me who to call. That's worth a couple extra bucks to me and earns my loyalty.

I hate seeing real humans and their small businesses being replaced by Soulless, Inc.

I am so very blessed
I went in to Ridge Hardware last week to look for a very specific/unique part for our aerator. Going in, I realized that it was unlikely that it would be there, but I was *really* trying to avoid a trip in to town. As suspected, they didn't carry what I was looking for, but the helpful attendant offered up suggestions to what might be a good substitution. After wandering through the aisles, I found something PERFECT for the job. This is why helpful staff is invaluable, and why engaging with customers is so awesome. Ridge Hardware did just that.

Ridge Hardware for the win! 🎉 @TPD

Duct tape and baler twine fixes a lot of stuff! But probably not your aerator. Glad my people were able to help.

I've had great experiences with the employees at the Home Depot and Menards in my hometown being knowledgeable. The guy at the Menards gave me good advice on I stalling a pressure regulator to the incoming water supply.
