Trump tariffs cause 126 lost jobs

Beleaguered Fairfield County is losing another 126 jobs after TV-maker Element Electronics said Monday it will close its Winnsboro plant in response to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
In a letter to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce obtained by The State, Element wrote “the layoff and closure is a result of the new tariffs that were recently and unexpectedly imposed on many goods imported from China, including the key television components used in our assembly operations in Winnsboro.”
Trump’s tariffs already have made an impact in manufacturing-heavy South Carolina.

Swedish automaker Volvo has said it may have to break its promise to hire 4,000 employees for a new plant in South Carolina. And German automaker BMW recently wrote U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross saying the tariffs could jeopardize 45,000 S.C. jobs, including 10,000 at its Spartanburg plant and 35,000 at BMW suppliers.

unemployment is stil @ 3.9 %

Nice try comrade...tell that to the 126 people who lost their jobs solely as a result of our incompetent President.

Unemployment has been trending to the current level for years...and this level at this rough point in time was anticipated before the inept one won the WH. (not by the people you read of course...because your only filter is propaganda).

Hmmm,. It would be relatively easy to look at the Doom & Gloom recession prophets of last year (AND 2016) who said we would descend into economic malaise & unemployment BECAUSE of Trump. Hmmm, now the Social media misfits HOPE for an economic collapse (that never came). This is the delusion & bitterness of the 2016 LOSERS. People must suffer,...that is what Dems/Liberals/Socialists and various gutter dwelling types (but I repeat myself) want.

U.S. Steel has already hired 300 workers and plans to hire 500 more as they reopen a closed steel mill.

Sorry these people lost their jobs, but maybe someone else can start making the parts they were buying from China.

Trump is trying to halt the screwing we got during other President's reign when they allowed foreign countries to push us around.

It's time we started charging what they do. That's called fair trade.

Then why did Little Black Sambo tell us flat out that "those jobs are never coming back"??

Exactly how many years does years equal, you buffoon? Barry sure never predicted, nor anticipated, this level of unemployment.

What doesn't a waffle whiffer like you understand about the word 'historic' in the term 'historic levels'?

Starting in March, the company will start cranking out TVs from a new flat-screen facility in Detroit, Michigan, making it the only company currently assembling TVs in the United States. While everyone assumes that labor costs here make that prohibitively expensive, Element Electronics is gambling that by shortening the supply chain—the time and cost of bringing fully assembled TVs to the U.S. from China or other offshore factories and suppliers—it can remain cost-competitive while being able to react faster to changing market conditions here in the States.

But there's also a little patriotic pride in being able to bring work to the U.S. while many other manufacturing-type jobs leave the country, says Element Electronics president Mike O'Shaughnessy, who believes that global economic trends will make American production more viable over time.

The Wall Street Journal reported July 17, 2014, that Element doesn’t do much assembly work at the plant. The article said assembly-line employees open boxes with TVs shipped from China, inspect the sets for damage, unscrew a plastic panel and insert a Chinese-made memory board, and conduct mechanical tests. Then the television is put back in its box and shipped to retailers.

The TVs often are shipped in red, white and blue boxes that have a picture of Statue of Liberty and say "Assembled in the USA," a claim Walmart has vaunted in selling the sets. But the back of many of the sets bears small print that says "Made in China."

Trump said the U.S. "doesn’t make television sets anymore."

He has a point. We know of no televisions on the market that bear the label "Made in USA," a claim that requires virtually all of the product to be manufactured domestically. An expert told us it’s "impossible" to build a TV in the United States without relying heavily on imported components. Evidence suggests about 99 percent of sets sold in the United States are fully made and assembled overseas, mainly in Asia.

so 2014 the WSJ reported Element wasn't doing much more than inspecting Chinese assembled TV's ... Elements Website says there are 'proudly assembling' TV's in SC

A television maker in Winnsboro that uses Chinese components for its assembly operation has announced that increased costs related to tariffs are forcing it to shut down.

Element Electronics imports all their parts, and several were already subject to import taxes, said Davenport.

"The parts that are being taxed, that have a tariff on them, there was a tariff on them already of 4.5 percent," Davenport said.

Specifics about those parts were unavailable Tuesday as Element Electronics' management could not be reached. But Kennedy, in his letter to the state, spelled out the issue:

"The layoff and closure is a result of the new tariffs that were recently and unexpectedly imposed on many goods imported from China, including the key television components used in our assembly operations in Winnsboro."

This is true.

However, recall that the prediction for Mr. Trump's presidency was that he would cause massive economic failure in the United States. It would appear those predictions are extremely inaccurate. Not only did he NOT cause failures, but we have reached levels of unemployment that are record-settingly low.

Not something that would be considered the marks of incompetence in the presidency.

Why do you insist on lying so much?
Why can't you just simply enjoy the prosperity from the great repairs PRESIDENT Trump has accomplished?
Why do you constantly try & credit the Kenyan Mongrel for all of PRESIDENT Trump's accomplishments?
The Mongrel didn't just fail you, Brony. He failed ALL of us. He failed his grandparents. He failed Hillary. He failed blacks the most.
Why can't you just accept the fact that you backed a failure, he's now been relegated to the dustbin of historic failures, and move FORWARD with your miserable existence. All of your hate & misery can't feel good.
#MAGA!!
