Trying to find the right dog

Me and the wife can't agree on something and she gets pi**ed every time I say no. We are getting ready to move and since we are leaving the confines of base housing(moving to VA) she wants a dog for protection. She wants a dog that people will look at and be afraid to enter the property like a pitt, shepard, or a rotty. I want a lab or a mutt. Meanwhile we have a four month old baby and two cats. Any dog can protect the family but some have a tendancy to turn before others. Anyone with similar problems? Back home some insurance companies will not insure a house if certain breeds of dogs are on the property (which is total BS). Thanks

I found out after marriage, A man may wear the pants and think that he is boss in the house but the woman helps him take them off and you can't get into the panties with that attitude

You cannot count on any dog to fully protect you. What you are banking on is a great "Barker!"

She has it all wrong.

She is looking for a great sense of security when I am not there. We are not moving to Compton, just small town VA living in the county. Been cooped up with neighbors for 20 years I finally want some privacy. It doesn't help that she is not from America but we are going through immigration LEGALLY(totally different issue, and what she believes about America is from too much from the boob tube (blocked Jerry Springer and Maury already)

You may wish to point out that she has had a false sense of security "on base" for all of these years. Criminal statistics sky rocket on, and around military bases. She's safer where she is going.

I have a Standard Poodle and have had in the past a Dalmation. Don't let their cutesy looks fool you! My poodle would eat you alive if you came into his territory and the dalmation protected me fiercely. I also have an Akita mix who is more than willing to take a bite out of crime! :yay:

I have heard that the Standard Poodle is a great family and guard dog.

I wanted the same thing and got a rottie mutt and a doberman. I feel pretty safe when the hubby is not around. :yay:

Since we lost Tipper, I have looked into a few breeds on line. I like the standard poodles and the labradoodles, but want to do a rescue rather than buy a pup. Let me know if you hear of any. And I don't want one until the fall.

If my dog were more tolerant of other dogs, I'd rescue a dalmation. My dog (a catahoula) has a very loud, mean bark (any out of the ordinary noise outside sets him off :jameo:), and looks crazy, so people steer clear. :roflmao:

I moved to VA 4+ yrs ago-I now have 6 dogs-all but 1 is a "stray"-I have Shepherds, a Dobie, hounds and a mutt or 2-out of ALL of them, the hounds are the best watch dogs!
Give yourself time to settle in, make sure you have a fenced yard THEN think about getting a dog-until then, get a shotgun (keep it in a safe place!)!
Wait a month or two-you'll have a stray show up at your doorstep-folks in the VA countryside loves to let their dogs run loose!
BTW, where y'all moving to?

Invisible fence didn't keep out all the stray's I have :lmao: One of the dogs figgered out the invisible fencing real quick, that lasted all of 2 weeks. I put up a 4000 sq. ft compound to keep em all in-and several big "BEWARE OF DOG" signs.
Have you ever lived in the country before? Just curious!

That is where I was born and raised. I am heading back there after a 20 year hiatus (I was a little preoccupied). The invisisble fence would be just to keep what ever we decide on in the boundries. What ever crosses those boundries(after the Signs are posted of course) free game.

We just got a Fila Brasileiro and we love him to death. He is only 7 months old and he barks 2 or 3 times anytime a "stranger comes in the door. He also paces the house at night to check things out. The good thing is most insurance companies do not list the breed because it is a rare breed. Awesome guard dog, but not for the average dog owner. They also eat 4 cans of dog food a day. Check them out.

(But don't buy one from the above breeder. He is older and unable to care for his animals anymore.)

Believe it or not, I got my standard free! This man had moved here from NC and ended up in a townhouse with two standards and no yard for them to play in. He hadn't had my standard that long, but he was still in the puppy stage of his life. So the man wanted to find him a home with a large fenced in yard and kids to play with. I had everything he wanted for his dog. We have had him now for about 6 yrs. He is the greatest dog! He is so loveable and SMART as a whip! The only thing he does that is a little irritating is when the UPS guy is on or street he barks and runs back and forth non-stop till the truck leaves his ear shot!!! :lmao: He wants that truck soooooo bad! One of these days I'm gonna let him catch it! J/K
