tulip question

I have heard different theorys about tulip bulbs. One is that you have to dig them up every year, let them rest a year, then plant them again in the fall. Another theory is that they are only good for one year maybe two.

Mine bloomed the first year, nothing but greenery the second. I know people that have tulips that come up every year for them. What gives?

I found this:
Tulips are classified with perennials but often need to be treated as annuals. Dig up your tulips once the foliage has died & store them in a cool dry area for replanting in the fall. Tulips need well drained soil. To improve drainage add sand and compost to your soil. Tulips enjoy full sun.
from this site.

Seems like alot of work though...I know lots of people don't do that. But maybe over time their tulips might not do as well.

I never dug my tulips up, and they did great every year.

Beware though, the Deer LOVE the tulip buds before they bloom! They eat em right up!

Well, I,m going to did dig mine up and will store them in the garage over the summer. If I can find them in the fall my plan is to put them into pots. Then next spring after they bloom I can just put the pots in the garage for the summer for them to rest.

My husband will be so happy to hear that I have yet another garden project that has to camp out in the garage :lmao:

Thanks everyone.... :howdy:

Mine usually come up for two years and then nothing except the greenery. I just plant new ones every couple of years........

I've never had any problems with tulips. Plant them in the ground, fertilize them in the spring and summer, and they come back year after year with little or no fuss. :yay:

It may all be dependent on the variety. Some may be a bit less cold tolerant than others but all the ones I have planted have done well in this area.

I bought cheap tulip bulbs and after the first year only a few came back. But the more expensive ones I bought have come back year after year.
