Turkey bird question.

Now that Thanksgiving is upon us and all the stores have there ads for turkeys, frozen or fresh, when is it safe to buy a fresh turkey from the grocery store say like Giant or Food Lion and put it in the frig, is it safe to buy today for Thursday, how long can a fresh bird go before it might go bad, I know you could get one last Sunday, as long as its refrigerated how long before it should be cooked.

If it's a REAL fresh bird, like from a farm, you're best to cook it the day or day after you buy it.. I don't believe the "FRESH" tags on anything in a grocery store.. MAYBE "Previously Frozen and thawed in our back room to make you believe it's fresh"... Just the logistics of it don't make any sense at all.

Your proably right about "FRESH" tags in the grocery stores, makes you stop and think about.

Fresh turkey I think should only last about a day or two, nothing longer, before cooking.

Excerpt from the USDA website:

"the definition of "fresh" to refer to poultry whose internal temperature has never been below 26 °F."

Apparently, 26 degrees isn't frozen.
