"Turn the other cheek?"

Luke 22:54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.

First, I have to deal with Peter [Simon in the last chapter]. I don't know if he's the one who sliced the ear off the Roman Guard. It reads like it's something he would do. I do know it is reported that Peter [the Apostle] swore he would go with Jesus in prison or in death. It's a good thing Jesus didn't listen to Peter. We'd probably be waiting for the rooster to crow three times [three days] instead of just one night and one rooster crowing.

Peter wanted to be close enough to hear but not close enough to be seen.

Jesus looked right at Peter [Simon] when the third denial happened. Jesus was looking right at Peter [Simon] when the rooster crowed.

Peter's [Simon's] lack of faith was something Jesus expected.

The humans who arrested and jailed Jesus were NOT Christians. We spend a lot of time learning "Love your neighbor" and telling everyone how kind and gentle Jesus was. We send our children to Sunday School and teach them Jesus was a gentle shepherd. He would not lift a finger to injure a human. But apparently the guards weren't as kind. There's already been a kerfuffle that led to one of them requiring a healing during the arrest. Jesus wasn't invited to meet Pilate. Jesus was beaten and dragged. He would have gone willingly. He knew where they were taking Him. The Mission was well under way.

The guards were not caught on camera beating Jesus. The guards didn't wear bodycams. The guards made Jesus, the leader of thousands, bleed. They beat him with their fists. They were rude, extremely rude. They took His clothes and left Him naked. That was a horrible afront to any Jewish man. They might have even raped Him but that wouldn't make it to the book. Jesus had been stirring up crowds of thousands and thousands adding more tension to their jobs. They were all hyped up after the arrest. They were ready to fight.... and Jesus was the victim.... and they finally had Him alone.

Those Pharisees, Sadducees, Teachers of the Law, and Elders wouldn't complain that their prisoner had been beaten nearly to death. They had been waiting for this day. They had been plotting for this day.
