Luke 8:40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.
As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”
47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”
53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
Dr. Luke is telling us about two healings. I thought if I went out on a search, I would find the name of the diseases but alas I did not find the names. But... I was reminded of something when I read "Got Questions" response to my inquiry. I'm going to deal with the little girl first. She was twelve years old. Now, according to Jewish tradition, this little girl was just about old enough for Jarius to get his investment back. Sure, Jairus might have known and loved her, but the age of twelve is when she would have become betrothed and Jarius would have received her dowery. I know, it's cruel to think that, but it's fact.
Remember, women were not the same as men. Men thought of women as "helpers". Women were second class, like Slaves. Women produced children, that grew to tend the fields and produce more children to tend the bigger fields. At the Temple, women could only go to the courtyard where the slaves hung out. Women were property and this little girl was property ready for the harvest.
Now on to the hemorrhaging woman. She had been bleeding for twelve years. She spent everything she had on trying to get "clean". Remember, women on their time of the month were considered unclean and they could not be around others. Anything and anyone they touched was "unclean". She was in that crowd! According to the article [linked above] she made everyone who touched her in that crowd unclean!
Her "unclean" condition made it impossible for her to go to Temple. She was "unclean", so she was supposed to stay outside of town. I wonder, if she had to stay away from everyone, and she had been in this condition of twelve years, where did the money come from that paid the doctors? Was she a wealthy woman of the Jewish community who got a horrible case of uterine cysts? Did she have cystitis? Oh, that poor woman, having to deal with the pain and agony of cysts in her privates!!!! No wonder she spent everything she had! [oh, they didn't have kotex yet.]
Jesus healed them both. There was not limit to His knowledge of the human body and the ailments that would attack it. He was there to conquer death caused by Adam and Eve hanging out with that lying serpent back in the Garden. He could pull the little girl back from death. She could be become engaged and her dad, Jarius, could cash in with that dowery. I wonder if he had to discount her value since she had already died once. Maybe he could increase her value since she showed such a fighting spirit!
Jesus knew someone had touched Him. He felt the power leave His body. [Verse 46] So the healing power in Him was something He felt! How awesome would that be.... He healed her and He felt it. I wonder, is that why El has to rest after she uses her powers in "Stranger Things" Series? Were her character's healing powers loosely based on the healing powers of Jesus in Verse 46?
At any rate, now the hemorraging woman could go back to Temple and stand in the Courtyard with the Slaves. She could go back to her home, if she still has a home after being "unclean" for twelve years.
Oh well, the doctors and mourners will have to go make their money elsewhere.
Twelve is the number of "total authority" in the Bible [Twelve tribes of Israel] Both women were dealing with "twelves".
