Two extraordinary medical events and an arrest...

Luke 22:39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”
I don't know which verses touch me more. Luke, the guy who wrote this, was a doctor. These verses contain two extraordinary medical reports.
  • He reports that Jesus sweat blood.
  • He says Jesus stopped in the middle of being arrested and healed the man's ear.
Now when I was reading verses and I read "His sweat was like blood falling to the ground", I envisioned a big tear drop splashing in the sand. You know how it plops and disperses. Only that's not what it says. It says His tears were like blood. That's when I decided to Bing it. According to the internet.... there is something called Hematidrosis. So, it is possible for the capillaries to burst, and tinge sweat and tears. This, according to the article, shows up when the victim is suffering severe anxiety or fear. Jesus knew what was coming and He was physically upset by it.

I also thought about what it's like when you know a punishment is pending, and it's going to be horrible, and great big salty tears flood the eyes. That's the feeling of impending doom. Jesus knew about the man with a jug. Jesus knew about the baby donkey. Jesus knew what each of the men in those events would say. Jesus even gave His disciples the answers before the man with the jug or the man with the baby donkey could ask them.

Jesus knew what was awaiting Him. He really didn't want to go through all that. He knew He had to, though. It's the only way to get home.

Now, about the healing. This is the second extraordinary medical event in these verse. Jesus stopped in the middle of being arrested, to heal a man's severed ear. Luke, a doctor mind you, says Jesus touched the man and healed Him. It looks like Jesus caused the guy to grow a new ear. It doesn't say He picked up the ear and put it back. It says He touched him and healed him.

That's when Jesus said, "That's enough!". His arrest was written in destiny back in Genesis. Humans didn't have to be involved. God had this all planned out. It doesn't say who had the sword in these verses. Some speculate it's Peter. I figure the fact that Jesus called Peter, Simon in the previous verses [yesterday] when He was talking about taking two swords, was a hint that Simon would try to interfere with the arrest. Simon [Peter] would use the sword. Jesus knew that too, right? To me it's another example of Simon's [Peter's] failure of faith. Peter did not trust Jesus to defend Himself. Peter, IMHO, did not quite believe Jesus to be the Son of God. Peter was still stuck in Simon mode.

Were they beating Jesus when the disciple used the sword to stop them? Was this like a brawl, until the ear got chopped? Jesus questioned them using clubs and swords. Was that like the tasers of today? They didn't just walk up to Him and cuff Him. The guard must have been all hyped up. They were doing a sneak attack, while the thousands of followers slept. They had to get in and get out before the crowd knew what was going on. This stings of an "Osama Bin Laden" type mission to me. Jesus said they would come like a thief in the night. It was even true for His arrest.

Two extraordinary medical events and an arrest took place that night. Jesus let them take Him, even though He knew what He was going to have to endure.

It's about two medical events... and an arrest.
