Chris Satullo: A not-so-glorious Fourth
U.S. atrocities are unworthy of our heritage.

By Chris Satullo

Put the fireworks in storage.

Cancel the parade.

Tuck the soaring speeches in a drawer for another time.

This year, America doesn't deserve to celebrate its birthday. This Fourth of July should be a day of quiet and atonement.

For we have sinned.

We have failed to pay attention. We've settled for lame excuses. We've spit on the memory of those who did that brave, brave thing in Philadelphia 232 years ago.

The America those men founded should never torture a prisoner.

The America they founded should never imprison people for years without charge or hearing.

The America they founded should never ship prisoners to foreign lands, knowing their new jailers might torture them.

Such abuses once were committed by the arrogant crowns of Europe, spawning rebellion.

Today, our nation does such things in the name of our safety. Petrified, unwilling to take the risks that love of liberty demands, we close our eyes.

We have done such things, on orders from the Oval Office. We have done them, without general outrage or shame.

Abu Ghraib. Guantanamo. CIA secret prisons. "Rendition" of prisoners to foreign torture chambers.

It's not enough that we had good reason to be scared.

The men huddled long ago in Philadelphia had better reason. A British fleet floated off the Jersey coast, full of hands eager to hang them from the nearest lampposts.

Yet they pledged their lives and sacred honor - no idle vow - to defend the "inalienable rights" of men. Inalienable - what does that signify? It means rights that belong to each person, simply by virtue of being human. Rights that can never be taken away, no matter what evil a person might do or might intend.

Surely one of those is the right not to be tortured. Surely that is a piece of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

This is the creed of July 4: No matter what it costs us, no matter how it scares us, no matter how foolish it seems to a cynical world, America should stand up for human rights.

No, not even the brave men who picked up a quill, dipped it in ink and signed the parchment that summer day in Philadelphia lived up perfectly to the creed. But they did something extraordinary, founding a new nation upon a vow to oppose all the evil habits of tyranny.

That is why history still honors them.

Those who are so corwardly that they would willingly give up our rights and freedoms, please do not pretend that this is patriotism. It isn't. Be honest with yourself, you are a coward. Period! To those that believe that any suggestion that anything that America does is wrong should leave the country, I would suggest that these people are the ones that have kept the freedoms of America fresh these past 200 + years, while people with your attitude goose stepped their way into history and infamy. Popular speech requires little, if any protection... It is the people who speak the unpopular truth that need the protection... the ones that love America not because of an accident of birth, but for what it stands for. I would suggest those that believe that patriotism is blind obedience to political parties be the ones that leave... I am sure there are some nice right wing, totalitarianism countries that would fit in perfect with your slavish cowardly obedience if the powers will only keep you safe from living free. Again, please don't snivel and call it being brave. As a disabled vet, I will tell you that that you are not brave and your ignorance is a shame to all that have and will serve. We are willing to die for your freedoms, you aren't willing to take the slightest risk. Sad.

A cheap shot at Rush and his listeners can't justify your anti American rant and are ridiculous. Al Queda and the left is on your side you traitor with your lastest propaganda! Just listen to your favorite cable stations CNN and MSNBC. They have all the same talking points as you and the Dems about the USA. I see you hate America. Why don't you leave along with the Philadelphia St Inquirer and its liberal owner Tierney.

"the quickest way to "the grave" is often established via a "search for moral high ground" to prove... It is oft realized too late--geesh, what was that point now??" Uh, ya, that's kind of the point That's what Jesus did. Remember?

Distrustful- "Irrational patriotism"??? Wow, Canada is in nine kinds of trouble if all Canadians feel like you do. Patriotism is THE thing that makes America what it is and I'm not talking about those few "hate America/blame America first " cowards you spoke of. Regarding how well Canada treats Terrorist suspects, well, we'll see how that works out for you but as for our prisoners, they aren't suspects, friend; they are the real deal! Sub human scum that deserve the same treatment they bestow upon their prisoners! You know, the ones with their throats cut or left hanging from a bridge. Your country stayed home with the other women and children while your neighbors were attacked and went to war to defend themselves. I just have to laugh at the "marching in protest" visual! Wow, scary. How bold. Let's also remember that your country followed the lead of the UN and let them make your decisions for you? Now whose ignorant and naive? You're lead around by the nose by those corrupt pocket lining idiots. I hope that works out for you too. Just don't come crying to the US when your in a jamb! We wouldn't want to insult you with our barbarism. Even if American takes another hit, I'd still rather be here than anywhere else in the world because American knows how to do the heavy lifting. We ought to be good at it since "allies" like you are sitting at home and pampering your terrorist buddies. Guess we'll just to agree to disagree.

well his readers don't seem to agree either ... :lmao:
