SUDAN: Living with the threat of rape in Darfur
Source: IRIN Aid workers say rape is widespread in Darfur, especially whenever the women venture out of the camps to find firewood. The arduous journey over boulder-strewn terrain to find the wood takes them 5km away from the relative safety of the camp into thorny bush where they face the threat of rape and possible abduction by the Janjawid.

SUDAN: The road to peace
Source: IRIN In the wake of the 20 July 2002 Machakos Protocol, and with peace talks between the government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) expected to resume in Kenya in January, the route to this achievement is worth tracking.

How are you going to sanction them? No more big screen TV's and esspresso beans?
We're gonna cut off funding and aid so the people who are eating will now starve and the death toll will rise. Then, we in the UN can write a letter letting you know we;re not happy with you.

They just don't friggin' get it, do they? The idea is to cut off aid and supposedly the leader of the country would feel terrible about the state his citizens are in and start complying with whatever the UN wants them to do.

This probably would work in a country where the leader actually gave a #### about their population. But if a government is systematically killing and torturing their people, what makes anyone think they'll care about starving them out?

Not only that, but the UN can impose sanctions until they turn blue and fall over, but that doesn't mean member nations will abide by the restrictions. Look what happened in Iraq.

Them not abide to sanctions. You've got to be mistaken. We're talking about harsh, punitive sanctions, Vrai. :sarcasm:

U.S. plans new financial sanctions on Sudan

WASHINGTON, March 14 (Reuters) - The United States could soon impose new sanctions against Sudan, including restrictions on companies that do business there in U.S. dollars, because of the government's refusal to accept an international force into Darfur, the U.S. special envoy to Sudan said on Wednesday.

There were also plans to impose travel bans on and confiscate the savings accounts of three individuals in Sudan, two politicians accused of "atrocious acts" and a rebel leader who was "obstructionist" in peace talks, U.S. envoy Andrew Natsios told a conference call with nongovernmental groups.

Natsios, who was in Sudan last week and met with its leaders, said it was up to U.S. President George W. Bush to announce the proposed sanctions, which are part of a "Plan B" to try and get Khartoum to agree to the hybrid force with a goal to stem the violence in Sudan's western Darfur region.

He did not specify when this might happen but said the United States and others were growing increasingly impatient.

This isn't going to make the Sudanese government end its atrocity against it's people... Didn't work for Saddam! :smack: :kickbutt:

If you've been watching any television, you've seen the boo hoo hooing ads admonishing Condi and Dubya that it's time to act in Darfur. I still have to ask, "Why the hell would anyone think we should act in Darfur if the African nations won't?"

What I can't figure out is what the hell they want them to do! Send troops in to overthrow their government? Because that's what it would take.

So then what happens? Iraq actually threatened us and the cry baby libs are screaming about Bush going to war. Sudan never did anything to us at all that I'm aware of. They're all of a sudden drumming up this horsecrap about the Cole and the only reason they're doing it is in hopes that Bush will act militarily so they can cry and scream some more.

This is the UN's problem and they've never given a tinker's damn about the US or US interests. I say to hell with Darfur. Not our problem.
