U.S. Religious Knowledge Quiz

http://www.pewforum.org/quiz/u-s-religious-knowledge/

You scored better than 97% of the public, below 1% and the same as 2%.

I guessed a few...

In which religion are Vishnu and Shiva central figures?
What was Joseph Smith’s religion?
According to rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court, is a public school teacher permitted to read from the Bible as an example of literature, or not?
Which of these religions aims at nirvana, the state of being free from suffering?
Which one of these preachers participated in the period of religious activity known as the First Great Awakening? I guessed this one wrong.

You scored better than 93% of the public, below 3% and the same as 4%.

I missed the reading of the bible and Great Awakening questions.

However, did you read the demographics of the quiz takers? Why WHITE Catholics and then Hispanic Catholics? Why WHITE "MAINLINE" or WHITE "Evangelical" Protestants and BLACK Protestants? But then just plain old Jews, Mormons and atheists? What about the other colors and why break it out that way only on a few religions and not all of them? Bothers me.

I don't know. Why do people who make pools do anything the way they do? I was just curious how I'd do. Actually, much better than I expected, but I went in thinking there would be more bible based questions. I should have known, since it does say "religious knowledge". Dur.

That's interesting. Maybe because religious people tend to know a lot about their own religion, but don't really have an interest in other religions?

But I do know several religious folks who don't have a lot of knowledge about their own religion. I had a friend who is Catholic and she said something about celebrating the Immaculate Conception, which prompted me to wonder how Catholics determined that Mary must be of immaculate conception, since it's not in the Bible. She "corrected" me by saying that the Immaculate Conception celebrates Jesus' conception, and we argued about it until she called her mother for confirmation - and got chastised for not knowing her own religious holy days.

Anyway, all religions are interesting - from paganism and mythology to modern cults.

This, and probably part of what they were looking at when they built the quiz. I think a lot of people in the somd circle are pretty well rounded when it comes to religion, and the bible.

This is funny.

I agree. Fascinating.

9 correct. I must have made some pretty good guesses.

Quite a few of mine were. At some point I probably read something that made something in the multiple choice answers familiar to me. Otherwise, I don't think I would have gotten them.

The test was to determine your religious knowledge. It wasn't a test to measure how 'religious' a person is or isn't. I think if you pass the walks on water test then you aced it. That water into wine would be a neat party trick and make you quite popular.

Right there. Multiple choice makes all tests easier. I would never have remembered the name Jonathan Edwards on a fill inb the blank, I just knew he was the oldest guy on the list. The survey sez I got 14 of 15 - I "did not answer" #4 about the Jewish sabbath beginning on Friday. I know I answered it, but, oh, well. It was very easy, really, with a Christian background and high school geography from 43 years ago.
