Uncrashable car?

I saw a show the other night (I think it was on the Science Channel, can't remember for sure) and they were talking about the future of cars. One maker (Volvo?) said they were working on making a car that wouldn't let itself crash. They said it would have sensors and automatically stop if it got too close to something. They are studying grasshoppers because grasshoppers frequently fly in swarms and they never run into each other. Grasshoppers have a very simple brain, so their movements are all reflexes, which is much faster than us trying to react. They said they'd eventually like to have cars that can interact with each other on the roads, so we would hardly have to do anything to drive.

Do you want cars that can make decisions for you? Why or why not?

It may allow you to never be at fault for a crash, but there is no way it can prevent any form of crash. Your still gonna get sideswiped, hit from the back, and if a car cuts in front of you and slams on the breaks, your still gonna crash.

No, I don't want -cars- to drive themselves. I want tubes/railways that drive for themselves.

I read about a developing "train" in some asian country that is being developed. Each "train" can fit around 6 people and the flow of traffic is nonstop. If you are getting off at the next station, right before you reach the station the car goes on a secondary track to the load/unload area where you get out, somebody else gets in, and off that car goes again, awaiting for a hole (calulated by when another car leaves the main track to go to the unload/load area) and cascades back in line.

End result? Non-stop service at ridiculously high speeds from your location to your destination.

In My Opinion
My dads buick beeps different tones for safety.
one if you start to cross over the white or yellow line ( I think the turn signal use over rides this one) a different tone if something is too close to the back, one that tones in you are tailgaiting, one for speeding..

like a damn christmas song done with the bells or something when he drives.

I'll pass on that.
Teaching evasive/defensive driving maneuvers to more people would be more effective at preventing accidents than having a car that just STOPS when it gets close to something.

In doubt? Throttle out!
So if you're going down the road and the car "senses" an accident at 55 mph and stops instantly, how is that safe? Not only will everything in your car get thrown around (whiplash is fun!!), but what about the cars behind you that don't prevent addicents? Is the "safe" car going to levatate up over them so that they don't rear-end you at 55mph?
