Three Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) unified track teams earned first place at the 2019 State Special Olympics Interscholastic Unified Sports Track and Field Invitational held May 14-15 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. Teams from La Plata, North Point and Thomas Stone high schools earned first place in their respective divisions of the tournament.
The La Plata team earned first place with 124 points in session II, division I of the event. Athletes compete in different sessions and divisions during the tournament based on team size and event.
The team from North Point combined with the Stone team to win first place with 55 points in session I, division I of the event.
Events featured during the tournament include track and field challenges such as dash races and the shot-out throw to the long jump and javelin throw. Unified sports teams include a combination of students with and without disabilities who train together and compete against other schools.
La Plata’s team includes students Michelle Candela, Shane Crockett, Joanna Diaz-Ocana, Alexandra Elford, Sydney Garner, Kavon Green-Johnson, Falon Harper, James Howison, Kyndall Kahouk, Edward Key, Ronnie King, Kelsey Kluh, Robert Lytton, Crista Mayo, Anthony Macri, Austin McAlwee, Casey Pham, Kelly Resendes, Janel Reyes, Abi Rogalski, Jabari Rogers, Marina Schaeffer, Maria Schroeck, Brandon Starcher, Shelly Sweeney, Rebecca Ulloa, Brandon Welch, Kaitlyn Welch and Rebecca White. Coaches of the team are La Plata special education teacher Stephanie Barry and James Swann, La Plata’s Building Service Manager.
North Point’s team includes students Devin Abraham, Naseem Abujuma, Christina Alvarez, Satchell Ball, Jalen Logan, Jalisa Logan, Richard Miller II and Aaron Mitchell. North Point physical education teacher Alison Cheney coaches the team. The Stone team includes students Jacob Eskew and Emily Nelson, and is coached by Kimberly Mack, an instructional assistant at Stone.
Additionally, student teams from Maurice J. McDonough and Westlake high schools earned a fourth-place award in their respective divisions.
CCPS partners with Special Olympics Maryland to offer students of all abilities the opportunity to participate in sports programs. Participation in unified sports increases annually. Students learn about social, communication and relationship-building skills, teamwork and exploring their athletic abilities.
