Dear Friends and Visitors to marlowheights60sand70s.com,
I thought I’d put together this newsletter, to inform you of changes to my website. This might be particularly helpful if you haven’t visited the site in a while, and would like to know about recent additions or changes. Here they are:
Added the Marlow Heights History page. This is new and in its infancy, but contains a 1950s era aerial photo of Marlow Heights, a link to Hillcrest/Marlow Heights history (from a Harvard site no less), and a link to a history of Silver Hill/Morningside. The data is obviously dated, considering a statement that says, “Another population change has been the movement of nonwhites into the neighborhood; they now comprise over 12 percent of the total residency, contrasted to less than two percent in 1960.” Huh? Obviously, the enumerators haven’t been to Marlow Heights in quite a while. J
In the, “Whatever Happened To…?, page, I’ve added a few more names. Remember, this is a place where you can email me the name of a friend, classmate, or neighbor from the Marlow Heights area and I’ll put it up on the page. Who knows, someone reading this page might know something about the person you’re looking for and respond to me? If I find anything out, I’ll write you back with the information I’ve been given. Also, in going through this page, if you know something about anyone listed, please email me with what you know and I’ll update the page.
Message Board. Actually, the message board has been up for a couple of months, but except for a handful of posts, no one has really used it. Hey, try it out! You just may link up with an old classmate, friend, or relative of someone you know.
Please check out the Red Barn page. Of particular note is the recipe for making a, “Barn Buster”. I’ve followed the recipe and can tell you that it can bring back memories of eating at the “Dead Barn”. J
Go to the, “Do You Remember…”, page and check out the link for the recipe for a, “Mighty Mo” aka Royal Burger. I’ve “lab tested” this as well, and it comes pretty close to the Royal Burgers I used to make at the Jr. Hot Shoppes at Iverson Mall.
How about contributing something to the, “That Was Then, This Is Now” page? Come on, we haven’t changed that much, have we? J
I should be posting pictures soon of a couple of “Peters” jackets I own, as soon as a local embroidery shop finishes a job I hired them for. If you remember Grits, this will be familiar. One jacket (the preferred navy blue color) will have two hearts and me and my wife’s name, while the other will have a pair of dice, with my name and “Marlow Heights” emblazoned.
Please also check out the, “Sounds” page, where you’ll find links to the great old WPGC and WEAM, when the Top 40 format was king. Man, I used to go to sleep listening to those stations, with a transistor radio underneath my pillow!
One more thing, a special request. If anyone is going to be in Marlow Heights anytime soon and can spend a little time taking pictures, I would appreciate shots of the following:
Steak in a Sack
Sandymount Elementary (Sandymount has long been closed but there is a Christian School in its place).
Benjamin Stoddert Middle School (formerly Jr High School).
The Marlow Heights Shopping Center Sign
The main Iverson Mall sign
Marlow Fairlanes Bowling Alley
Raleigh Road where it goes over the old creek in Deer Park (where there used to be a foot bridge).
