Dear Friends and Visitors to marlowheights60sand70s.com,

I thought I’d put together this newsletter, to inform you of changes to my website. This might be particularly helpful if you haven’t visited the site in a while, and would like to know about recent additions or changes. Here they are:

Added the Marlow Heights History page. This is new and in its infancy, but contains a 1950s era aerial photo of Marlow Heights, a link to Hillcrest/Marlow Heights history (from a Harvard site no less), and a link to a history of Silver Hill/Morningside. The data is obviously dated, considering a statement that says, “Another population change has been the movement of nonwhites into the neighborhood; they now comprise over 12 percent of the total residency, contrasted to less than two percent in 1960.” Huh? Obviously, the enumerators haven’t been to Marlow Heights in quite a while. J

In the, “Whatever Happened To…?, page, I’ve added a few more names. Remember, this is a place where you can email me the name of a friend, classmate, or neighbor from the Marlow Heights area and I’ll put it up on the page. Who knows, someone reading this page might know something about the person you’re looking for and respond to me? If I find anything out, I’ll write you back with the information I’ve been given. Also, in going through this page, if you know something about anyone listed, please email me with what you know and I’ll update the page.

Message Board. Actually, the message board has been up for a couple of months, but except for a handful of posts, no one has really used it. Hey, try it out! You just may link up with an old classmate, friend, or relative of someone you know.

Please check out the Red Barn page. Of particular note is the recipe for making a, “Barn Buster”. I’ve followed the recipe and can tell you that it can bring back memories of eating at the “Dead Barn”. J

Go to the, “Do You Remember…”, page and check out the link for the recipe for a, “Mighty Mo” aka Royal Burger. I’ve “lab tested” this as well, and it comes pretty close to the Royal Burgers I used to make at the Jr. Hot Shoppes at Iverson Mall.

How about contributing something to the, “That Was Then, This Is Now” page? Come on, we haven’t changed that much, have we? J

I should be posting pictures soon of a couple of “Peters” jackets I own, as soon as a local embroidery shop finishes a job I hired them for. If you remember Grits, this will be familiar. One jacket (the preferred navy blue color) will have two hearts and me and my wife’s name, while the other will have a pair of dice, with my name and “Marlow Heights” emblazoned.

Please also check out the, “Sounds” page, where you’ll find links to the great old WPGC and WEAM, when the Top 40 format was king. Man, I used to go to sleep listening to those stations, with a transistor radio underneath my pillow!

One more thing, a special request. If anyone is going to be in Marlow Heights anytime soon and can spend a little time taking pictures, I would appreciate shots of the following:

Steak in a Sack
Sandymount Elementary (Sandymount has long been closed but there is a Christian School in its place).
Benjamin Stoddert Middle School (formerly Jr High School).
The Marlow Heights Shopping Center Sign
The main Iverson Mall sign
Marlow Fairlanes Bowling Alley
Raleigh Road where it goes over the old creek in Deer Park (where there used to be a foot bridge).

Eastover Shopping Center was on Indain Head Highway at the DC line in Maryland, its still there but I dont know what kind of stores would still be there. I do know that the the Prince Georges County Police now have there Oxon Hill Police station in the shopping center having moved from Livingston Road bye the Fire House a few years back. The McDonalds is still on the corner by Livingston Rd. and Indian Head Hwy., right where the road goes into the town of Forest Hgts. Also there was a Arbys just around the corner on the service road which I believe was one of the first in that area at the time. I used to frequent both of them as my buddy and I would cruise around Glassmanor, he went to Potomac and I went to Crossland, his girlfriend lived in Glassmanor, was a hot place for the babes back then as several of the Potomac cheerleaders lived in Glassmanor. I just drove through Marlow Heights yesterday Chuck the shopping center is still pretty much the same, dont know if you remember the K-Mart across from that its being converted into huge church, everything thats big up there and empty is being converted into a church. Crime in PG is soaring murder rate way up beleive its like about 40 for the year so far, police chases either PG chasing into DC or DC chasing into PG. People getting robbed in there homes, had a couple of guys just recently rob like about 7 people, either in there yards or by knock at the door, one in Hillcrest several Temple Hills a couple in Camp Springs. It's ashame its just not a very safe place anymore.

Thanks, OHG. Sorry, I deleted my question about "Eastover" after having Googled it. Why I did not think of doing that before. Guess I just wasn't sure there was such a place, most of my past is a blurr. Thanks again for the info.

Old Hillcrest Guy,
My memories of Eastover during the 60s and 70s are mainly that this is where the closest McDonalds was at the time from where we lived in Deer Park Heights. As for the PG County Police Department Station on Livingston Road years back, I remember that, too. Me and some friends were caught inside a vacant building behind the 7-11 across from the Fairlanes Bowling Alley in Marlow Heights, and two PG County units responded, frisked us, handcuffed us, and took us to the station. We were all of 13, 11, and 10 years old.

Here's the story. The building behind 7-11 was a former private residence next to the old martial arts school. Someone had opened one of the windows in the basement and it became the place to "explore" in the neighborhood. We were the unfortunate ones that happened to be inside when the PG County Police showed up. At the Livingston Road station, we had to call our parents to come pick us up (fortunately, the owner of the property, which eventually became a used car dealer, didn't press trespassing charges). My father went ballistic and made me call my supervisor at Jr Hot Shoppes to quit my job there. I was also put on "bedroom" restriction for a month. Fortunately, my father changed his mind and let me keep my job.

Years later, when I returned to the DC area as active duty Air Force, the Eastover Shopping Center was where I went for the closest Popeyes Fried Chicken. This was in the mid to late 80's. I have no idea what the area is like now. Back in the early 70s, though, I remember there was a new Hardees restaurant close to the PG County Police Station, and Hardees was kind of new to the area at the time (remember the local TV commercials at the time, with the John Wayne character--"Hurry on down to Hardees, pardner, where the burgers are charcoal broiled". "Hot apple pie. Hey, watch out for those apple pies, Pardner, they are really hot").

Anyway, I know PG County in general is not a safe place to live. That's why I'm trying to get on with a company in Lexington Park. Seems a lot of my old friends and former classmates have moved down that way. :)
