Urinary Tract Infection in Cats

Has anyone ever had their cat get a urinary tract infection? I have two girl cats and one boy cat(Tiger). Well I started noticing that Tiger was urinating outside the litter box. At first I didn't think much of it. Then I noticed that there was blood in his urine. He would also go to the bathroom like every five minutes and only a little at at time. That's when I decided to take him to the vet. They determined it was an infection and did a urinalysis on him. The results of his urinalysis came back that he had no crystals in his urine(she said the crystals could cause stones). They also gave him about two weeks of antiobiotics to take which he just finished taking. They told me that I should change his diet to prevent him from getting more infections, and of course they want you to buy the food that they have there, which is so expensive. I know that there are other cat food brands that promote urinary tract health...couldn't I just feed him that? Im just curious if anyone has any experience with this and if so, any other suggestions you may have.

My cat had a UTI and after the pills I had to shove down its throat (hated doing that) I changed her food to Science diet (indoor cat) and havent had any issues at all since. Its been over a year now. S.D. is kinda spendy so Im not sure what your price range is. I know I spend 80.00 a month on my animals, its in the budget and I plan for it every month. (since I had these animals when I was married can I get Child Support from her)? :killingme

I have one cat working on cat number 2 from catts litter she has at her house when they are ready to come home.

I usually just buy a big bag of food for the cat and same for the dog and that way I don't have to shop as often for there food. But I wish the dog treats lasted as long as the dog food does as it seems everytime I turn my head I am buying more dog treats.

I am lucky so far and don't have to feed my 14yr old special diet catfood. She gets purina one indoor catfood and the dog gets IAMS Large Breed puppy food but I buy them both in the big bags.

$80 a month?

Science diet really isn't really a very good food.

I go back and forth between Spots Stew and Wellness for my kitties and I limit the amount of dry food they get. They also get canned food and chicken.

Our Calico had UTIs and ended up with a bladder stone she had to have surgery for. This was about 3 years ago. After the surgery, we switched her to IAMS Urinary Tract formula. She became bulemic (we tried it for over a month), so we switched to IAMS Healthy Weight Formula (she was big boned) and she hasn't had any trouble since. When she was sick, she dropped about 7 pounds. Now, she's happy and maintans a weight the vet is happy with. Good luck with your kitty!

I agree, Iams makes a good product. I use Iams weight maintenance and hairball maintenance formula. It's all in one bag now and makes it a lot more convenient!

You know, it's funny, but when I try the weight/hairball formula, they both barf a lot. When I go back to just the weight, they are both fine. :ohwell:

That's weird! I know when I changed them from friskies wet to 9 lives wet when they were eating wet they barfed a lot too. Maybe they are just showing their distast for the food! :lmao:

I have used Walmart brand Special kitty Urinary Tract formula and it's been probably about a year and no problems with it. I mix it with regular food because she always tries to eat my other cats food.

I have 6 extremely healthy cats that I have raised on Iams. (Except Garfield, he's a newbie) Then only one that has had problems was a sick baby when I got her. That would be #7 and her name is Tasha. But she is much better now and playing like a kitten again. My Vet does not shun Iams and told me it was a good catfood. All of my cats look good, even my sick baby.

My vet recommended IAMS too and they both seem to like it.

Vets don't really have a clue what is good pet food. You have to go by the ingredients and decide for yourself. AND vets get perks from pet food distributors.

Iams is a rather pricey food considering it's full of filler ingredients that aren't really good for your pet.

What food do you suggest? And is it within my price range? I am not rolling in money, especially with all these cats to vet and such.

 Shouldnt they know? I know they get perks for selling certain brands in the clinic but I cant see a vet telling you to purchase something thatll be harmful or bad. I think Ill stick with the Science Diet, I know they like it they are happy and they are healthy..
But thank you for the advice on other brands.
