"WASHINGTON: The Air Force plans to relieve at least five officers of their commands for allowing nuclear-armed missiles to be mistakenly loaded on a B-52 bomber and flown across the United States, the worst known violation of nuclear security in decades.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is to be briefed Friday on the plan to fire the officers and other results of a six-week Air Force probe into the Aug. 30 incident. No one noticed for hours that the weapons were aboard the eight-engine bomber, several Defense Department officials said.

One said the investigation found long-established procedures for handling the munitions were not followed, and it recommended that five or more officers be relieved of their duties."

You wonder what happened to the chain of custody. Guess someone was just too busy/lazy to double check.

I can't remember. Did they figure it out while the bird was still in the air or did they figure it out after it was on the ground at it's destination?

How would you like to have been that pilot if they figured this out in flight??

Uh Sir.... Guess what....

I think it was the guys at Home base that realized the SNAFU. Just wasn't sure at what point.

The missiles were on the plane at Minot for 15 hours without appropriate security, and at Barksdale for 9 hours before the ground crew unloading the missiles noticed what they were.

It appears that both types of missiles were stored in the same bunker. There was a huge chain of errors, and complacency definitely appears to be the root of the problem.

Served three years at Barksdale. Went through a lot of ORI-type exercises. The ing-Commander at Minot is toast if he didn't ensure weps did his job right last time the toys came outta the bunker.

Yep. This is bad for the careers of people who weren't even directly involved.

I'd imagine AQ is looking at this as a missed oppurtunity. Just think how bad this could have been.

I wonder if DEVGRU have been out sneaking and peaking at the AF's security measures since the incident?
