"VIROQUA, Wis. — A U.S. soldier mistakenly buried with the enemy at the close of World War II begins the final leg of his unlikely journey home Friday in a small Wisconsin town he probably never heard of, but that produced a vital link to finding and identifying his remains.

A horse-drawn funeral hearse is scheduled to deliver the remains of Pfc. Lawrence S. Gordon to a VFW Post at 1:20 p.m., at the close of a noon hour public reception, also at the post. The reception and ensuing funeral procession through town are expected to draw many Viroqua area residents wishing to pay their respects to a soldier whose family for decades did not know what happened to him after he died in the war."

Why?

WWII we still had the warrior ethos, and the US was committed enough to winning wars that our soldiers were buried on the battlefields and on the countries where they fell.

Understand the unknown, but why bring him "home" and not bury him with his brothers that are all still there.

I agree - why bring the remains all the way back here when there are numerous hallowed grounds of US WWII dead in France, taken well care of by the French people, where he could have been interred with his fellow countryman who paid the ultimate price? Is there some kind of political point to be made 70 years later?

Probably. Who even knows, anymore. We can't trust the news media, our government, or the rest of the world. We are winging it; so to speak.
