I usually don't buy anything based on a " commercial" review..most are biased and one sided.I will read individual reviews from real people but take them with a grain of salt.. I buy based on my experience, wants and needs.

So, understand that while Jalopnik is a commercial entity, articles like this are usually crwdsourced, and in this case, crowdsourced from people car-geeky enough that they read an automotive enthusiast blog. SO, the opinions are not from one person, and ran through editorial to see who's bought the most ad time this month, but rather from a bunch of folks who would usually be the one person everyone you know goes to with questions.

So, imagine you are sitting in a greasy garage with 20-30 guys, all of whom are those kinds of guys, and they get to discussing a topic like this. That's the sort of thing you get from this article. It's not what you might get from USA Today :) And the discussion in the comments illumnates the choices pretty good to.

:yay:

I looked at the Ford Focus Electric ... barely a 90 mile limit before needing a recharge
... I'd need a charging station at work, I wonder if they would notice the extension cord out the back door

Chevy Volts are in complete recall because they are catching on fire and burning up.

no recommendations ?

Neon
Charger R/T
Samurai

Neon was good, how many stock drivetrains can take the addition of 130or more wheel horsepower soley through boost and timing and not puke their guts? Espcially FWD ones :) But only the SRT version recmooneded, and only for a mechanically inclined person. Stock Neon, okay, but I was ruined before ever driving a normal one :)
Charger SRT - getting on in miles, think it's gonna make 200K with the only major repair being the oil pump, at +195K now. Trans is showing signs that it's not a happy camper any more. R/T, just as reliable, I think, and easily more power than most folks want. But big and weighty, the Claymore sword of cars. :)
Samurai is a time machine, plain and simple. Motoring at it's most basic. Buy a clean well maintained one, and it should run forever. Not a lot to go wrong.

For me, making recommendations depend so heavily on what the driver wants and needs, there is never one to recommend. Hell, very few cars meet all the needs and wants of only one person. Any buying consutant, and there are folks who make money doing this, will spend time quizzing the buyer, and making a matrix of these things. And of course educating the buyer that you cannot have it all. Sorry, but weight and power and MPG form a triangle, and any movement of one makes the others shift. Add power, take away mpg. Reduce weight, increase MPG.

Great cars, will rack up a million miles, but now, instead of the people getting out of your way because they think you are a cop, they are getting out of your way because they think you are one of the millions of criminals who are jazzed they can buy these things dirt cheap and ride in the front for a change........

I know that's the Crown Vic, but very few folks will make the distinction........

Man, I'm still here !!!
heaven forbid, my 08 Acura RL got totaled, i'd buy another 08 in a second. 09 on has that STUPID turtle beak front ughhh.

it's fast enough, enough luxury for me, solid car, AWD for snow, good sound system, only bad is the NAV system's quirky, GPS suxs, just use my google maps on phone now.

Mine has close to 200k on the clock. So far only one major issue. Rebuilt the deferential a few years ago. Comfortable, reliable, good MPG for it's size. I split driving time between that and my 1995 F-250 power stroke.
