In keeping with tradition now spanning more than two centuries, the U. S. Navy names newly commissioned vessels for prominent national personages. The USS Roosevelt, USS Lincoln, USS Nimitz, and more recently, the USS George H. W. Bush all come to mind among the list of appropriate honors bestowed.
Today, the Navy announced the launching of the USS William J. Clinton, a shallow-draft troop transport of the famous Dingy class. The vessel is named for former president Bill Clinton in honor of his extraordinary service and exemplary leadership.
Shown here at her christening, the USS Clinton wears the colors of the Navy Recreation Services branch where she is expected to serve with distinction among the 3,963 others in the same class.
