ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts.

A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products — carries elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health disorders.

If miggy wasn't eating Captain Crunch right now I bet she'd have the answer.

It's a flawed study. They didn't look at what diesases and illnesses people were prone to regardless of diet. My illness caused me to become vegetarian. Your illness caused you to become one too. Not the other way around.

However, I think they also looked at VEGANS not the vegetarians who do get a lot more variety in their diet.

I've recently discovered I'm a Pescatarian and because I can eat seafood and not become violently ill. It's so exciting! But I miss bacon...a lot.

That's why I am a Presbyterian; seafood, bacon, alcohol, masturbation, cussing, pre marital sex, we can do it all.

You know, not everyone can be vegetarian despite their desire to do so. Physiologically, not everyone's body is efficient at utilizing and storing fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin A from plant based sources as opposed to the more bioavailable animal based sources. Also, each individual's ability to start the break down carbohydrates by salivary amylase can vay by a documented multiplicity of 8. Meaning that the glycemic index of each food can be up to 8 times different than how it's recorded on the glycemic index chart. Those people would benefit from a more paleo style diet that incorporates meat and animal products. That's just how it is. It's important to note that people's diets, in theory, should be more about their own personal health and personal responsibilty and less about the appearance of how much better they are than everyone else for eating a certain way. Society gloats when this sort of research comes out because people tire of the generally smug attitudes of vegetarians and vegans.

To be fair, there's an entire section of that study dedicated to the large flaws in their research (and they are pretty large flaws). The biggest takeaway point from this should be that this is an area that probably should be researched much more thoroughly......not that anyone would listen though. They'll just read and pass on internet based material that supports what they want to do no matter how legitimate it actually is.
