Vestibular Disease

Has anyone hade a dog with this diagnosis? I have an 8 year old boxer gal and a SUPER vet who JUST retired this month. I am still researching a new vet, but in the mean time, she's been diagnosed (via expensive pet ER) with vestibular disease. I was told she'd adapt but she's getting progressivly worse. She now even walks around with the permanent head tilt.... I am just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with this, or if there is any GOOD prognosis? I don't have kids, these dogs are my kids, so any help is appreciated.

If it has progressed to a head tilt then I would go back to your regular vet. It could be a symptom of a tumor, deep ear infection, Lyme disease, idiopathic (unknown reasons) or a neurological disorder. I have been a vet tech for over 7 years, and have seen this many times. Honestly sometimes it gets better, but I have seen a very small number of dogs that it becomes a permanent thing. They still live full happy lives just in more of a circular world. Do you know what testing, xrays they performed?

Sorry, I missed the part of the regular vet situation. I have heard wonderful things about All Kinds, and worked with VCA St.Mary's. The Dr.'s at St.Mary's are all wonderful and consult with the other doctors in the hospital and call specialists when needed.

But as I said if it is progressing I would take her to a regular vet and discuss the options.

I go to all kinds and the vets there are wonderful. :). I like dr. autumn terry or dr. laine (sp) shad. She is very good too :). they both sit there and talk to the pets as if they are humans its actually kind of cute.

No, I'm not sure I've ever heard either my (old) regular vet OR the ER mention that? What is it??

It is a tick-borne disease and is far worse than Lyme. My lab had it and he could barely walk..and could not hold his head up at all. After a few days on antibiotics and pain meds, he was a different dog.

Ask for a test for lyme and ehrlicia.

I will ask for sure, but I know she has already had her shots for Lyme disease, I do live in the woods too, so I HOPE you are correct and it's something as simple as antibiotics and pain meds.

The shots for Lyme are not 100% effective (I don't even get them for my dogs) and there is no shot for ehrlichiosis....which is worse than Lyme.
