Virginia to require cancer vaccine for girls

RICHMOND, Va. - Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said Thursday he would sign legislation requiring all sixth-grade girls to be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that can cause cervical cancer.

Virginia would become the second state to mandate the vaccine for the human papillomavirus, or HPV, and the first to do it through legislative action. Texas Gov. Rick Perry sidestepped the Legislature and ordered the shots for girls there, but lawmakers are considering overriding that order.

“I think it strikes the right balance,” said Kaine, who wanted to make sure parents would have enough time to review the vaccine and allow them to opt out “without having to jump through hoops.”

The requirement would go into effect for the 2009 school year. If parents want to opt out, they must review literature provided by their child’s school, then sign a form.

The federal government approved Gardasil, the only vaccine on the market, in June and suggested it be given to females before they become sexually active.

Why don't they just vaccinate all the boys instead! :yay:

Boys don't have a cervix and they have not developed a vaccine for the male.
They do not know if this specific vaccine is effective on males. Don't you watch the news?? :smack:

OUCH! Damnit Morgan! :buttkick:
Yeah, I watch the news and read newspapers! I know all about Gardasil. In an editorial in the new issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of California at Irvine gynecologic oncology professor Bradley Monk argues that there are plenty of good reasons to do so: HPV has been linked with penile, anal and neck cancer in males, and can cause genital warts. If the vaccine can protect boys and men from disease, why not administer it?
And you're gonna tell me Merck doesn't have a vaccine for boys?

Why is the vaccine only recommended for girls/women ages 9-26?

The vaccine has been extensively tested in 9-26 year-old females so information is only available about vaccine safety and protection for girls/women of this age group. However, studies on the vaccine are now being done in boys/men, as well as in women older than 26 years of age. The FDA will consider licensing the vaccine for these other groups when there is research to show that it is safe and effective in these groups.

What about vaccinating males?

We do not yet know if the vaccine is effective in boys or men. Studies are now being done to find out if the vaccine works to prevent HPV infection and disease in males. When more information is available, this vaccine may be licensed and recommended for boys/men as well.

Gardisil has not been proven effective in a person without a cervix. It is for HPV linked with cervical cancer. Doesn't it protect against only 4 cancers? A vaccine needs to be developed for many more...people carry a lot more than 4 viruses.
