It appears that I got a virus that actually shut down my antivirus software and pretty much killed my hard drive.

I performed a reformat of my hard drive and went to reinstall windows xp but the following files will not reinstall.

msrepl40.dll
mstext40.dll
msxbde40.dll
script.dll
script_a.dll
sysmod.dll
sysmod_a.dll
ntoskrnl.exe
ntkrnlpa.exe
acpi.sys
usbhub.sys

Anyone have any idea how to fix this short of taking a sledgehammer to my hard drive.

Does your XP have all related service packs or did you obtain them via download upgrades?

The disk I have is SR1, I did the updates via the web. I totally wiped the hard drive before I tried to reinstall.

You should run a debug on the HD...If you need the routine, let me know...

Are you installing from a Geniune Windows cd or a restore cd that came with a namebrand computer like Dell or HP?

It could be the cd is damaged/scratched. If the HDD is completey formatted and the cd isn't damaged, I don't see why the files won't copy unless you have a failing HDD or failing memory modules.

Does anyone know if a windows xp recovery CD/DVD's will work on a different computer of ours (laptop) loaded with a different copy of Windows XP home edition (SP2)? ...in order to do a complete reinstall of XP?

Will it write over the existing version or install a complete new version identical the one the recovery discs were made on?

I don't have an original Windows XP CD. I tried calling HP about getting one for the new desktop we just purchased (it came preinstalled), but they won't give me one because they say the recovery disk will work. punks.

My goal is to wipe out the laptop and start all over again with new Windows XP and load the device drivers....fresh.

Any thoughts?
