vomiting after Spaying

My 5 month-old puppy just got Spayed this afternoon. I gave her about one tablespoon of her wet food 2 hours after I got her home. She ate it slow. It was a Lamb & Rice formula that she is use too. Is this normal? I am concerned, because she hasn't had anything to eat, or drink since 10 PM last night. I've never had any problems with any of the other dogs, and cats that I've had spayed/neutered. Any help, or advice would be appreciated.

They should have given you post surgery instructions. I think it is common for a little vomit. Don't force the food and water issue, when she is hungry she will eat. Probably in a couple of hours or tomorrow morning. Others will come on here and help explain it better, just didn't want you to think that no one read your post.

She can eat but not too much. If you feel she is too lethargic, you can give her a little Karo syrup on her gums or let her lick it from you fingers/spoon..not too much..it will raise her blood sugar. You can also let her lick ice cubes. Drinking too much water can cause her to vomit also. She should feel better in the morning.

If she's still wobbly, make sure she can't fall down steps, etc.

Thank you Prep H. I will hold any food until tomorrow. They did give me Post-Op Instructions, but said nothing about possible vomiting. They just said to take it slow. Thanks again for posting. She's comfortable right now.

She threw up again this morning. I think I'll hold the Salmon Oil for a day or so. She's perkey, but I am still concerned, so I'm going to call the Vet. I've never had this happen before, so may be she needs some Compazine.

:yay: give the vet a call... normal anesthesia will make them feel sick to stomach but that will usually go away by the next AM....

you may just have to start her on a bland diet now she has an empty stomach :huggy: and feels sick due to that

Hope all is well... give the pup a :huggy: from all of us

Thank you everybody for the tips, and suggestions. I did call the Vet, so Meat Ball has an appointment there early afternoon today. Luckily, she appears to be happy, and alert at this time. She did pee this morning, so if she is dehydrated, it's at the beginning stages. I will do a Post after the appointment, so that you all know how she's doing. Thanks again everybody!

Good luck at the vet today--I wouldn't worry. Especially if she was spayed in the afternoon. Dogs, just like humans, have various reactions to anesthesia and the effects can last 24-48 hours (although rarely that long). When my pups got neutered, I would ease them back to eating with a small cup of rice (minute rice made with water--no butter or seasoning) just to keep their diet super bland. Then within 2 days back to normal eating. I hope puppy is back to feeling great today :)

Meat Ball

Again..I'd like to thank everyone for caring, and giving me some advice. I am a Paramedic, but when it comes to your own Family, or Critters..I was worthless. Meat Ball had to have an injection of Pepcid, an Anti-Nausea medicine, and then she had to get IV Fluids. The Doc recomended boiled Chicken with Rice & no seasoning for the next 3 days. If that doesn't do the trick, she has to go back for x-rays to rule out Foreign Body Obstruction, and to get some Blood done. So far, she's kept her food down for 30 minutes, which is a LOT better than 2 minutes. Thank you everyone.

I usually cook the rice with some chicken stock mixed in. I hope she gets better soon. Love the name Meat Ball :yay:

Chicken & Rice

Thanks for the well-wishes Loper. It's been 2+ hours, and she's kept her food down. I am lazy..I got Sucess Rice, but I used the stock to add to the mixture.

Is that the rice that you microwave? Nothing wrong with that.. :) I just find that using a little stock/broth makes it more palatable for them. I've also used some pedialyte or gatorade mixed in the water to help with dehydration.

rice

Yes..it is the easy microwave rice. After I put the chicken & rice together, I poured the stock in it, and the rice absorbed it. That's a good idea about the Pedialyte, or Gator Aid! Never thought of that one. Meaty is doing great today, and has been going potty regularly. She's getting tired of being locked in her kennel too. They told me to keep her quiet for TWO WEEKS, and with her being a Boston Terrier, that's impossible unless you kennel them.

easy with that stuff..... their electrolytes balance is WAY different than ours!!

that stuff will push their sodium up real fast..... Ice chips are safer :yay:

we have seen it do more harm than good after running the pets electrolytes... and takes a while to undo the damage.

good advice

You are totally right about the differences between Human, and animal electrolytes. Even people can do real harm to themselves overdoing it with Gator Aide, etc.

I said MIXED with water! I have had great results using them and they help retain water for a dehydrated pup. I've had two pups that didn't care for ice chips and had to resort to other measures.

What harm have you seen done from adding these products to a dogs diet (that was for dehydration) that did more damage? Just curious because I've never heard of it...
