Primary Question:
Are you looking to REPLACE or SUPLEMENT your local telephone serbice from Verizon?
Replace
If you are looking to REPLACE Verizon, forget it! VONAGE is based on your broadband internet service. I suspect that is CABLE? Can you afford NOT to have phone service when the cable goes out. Remember that the Verizon local service rarely fails. It even works during power outages because they power everything with their own generators.
We've never had an outage with our cable, even with Izzy we had cable but didn't have electric for a week
If you are looking to SUPLEMENT Verizon, WHY? Long distance is so cheap, there is no way you could ever make enough calls to make Vonage worthwhile.
It's $19.99 a month for unlimited calling, local and long distance. I would get rid of Verizon all together.
Other Caveats:
- Your telephone must be plugged into a network device. So, if you want to have multiple phones throughout the house, forget it unless you have one of the new multi-station wireless phones that don't require jacks for the AUX units.
My husband explained something about a converter, but I didn't really follow him.
- I tried VONAGE because I make alot of calls to South America. 9 times out of 10 I could not get through. I cancelled the service after a few weeks. I had to return the unit to them or face an additional $40 charge. This was not mentioned at signup time.
Noted
- When I called, they did not have any numbers local to So. MD. I ended up with a NYC number. Will this work for you?
They have Lexington Park numbers now:shrug: Plus if I wanted to keep my number I could wait an additional 8 weeks for the service for them to do whatever it is they have to do to get the number.
I thought VONAGE was a great idea when I first heard of it. Now I wonder why anyone would ever use it, especially given their high prices. Service reliability is based on your broadband provider and cheap long distance rates can easily be found elsewhere.
