Four men have admitted to paying homeless people cash and cigarettes in exchange for forged signatures on ballot petitions and voter registration forms in Los Angeles' Skid Row neighborhood.

Richard Howard, Louis Thomas Wise, Christopher Joseph Williams and Nickey Demelvin were arrested in November 2018 for their participation in the voter fraud scheme during the election that year and in 2016.

The LA County District Attorney's Office on Wednesday announced that Howard, 64, and Wise, 37, pleaded no contest to one felony count each of registration of a fictitious person and subscribing a fictitious name or the name of another to an initiative petition.

Judge Michelle Friedman Appel has bound over Southfield Clerk Sherikia Hawkins on all six felony counts brought against her, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced today.
Stemming from the Nov. 6, 2018 general election, Hawkins was charged as follows:

• Count One. Election Law – Falsifying Returns/Records, a five-year felony and/or $1,000;
• Count Two. Forgery of a Public Record, a 14-year felony;
• Count Three. Misconduct in Office, a five-year felony and/or $10,000;
• Count Four. Using a Computer to Commit a Crime – Election Law – Falsifying Returns/Records, a seven-year felony and/or $5,000;
• Count Five. Using a Computer to Commit a Crime – Forgery of a Public Record, a 10-year felony and/or $10,000;
• Count Six. Using a Computer to Commit a Crime – Misconduct in Office, a seven-year felony and/or $5,000.

The case will now move to the Oakland County Circuit Court for trial. The judge and date have not yet been determined.

Southfield, Lathrup clerks see major increase in absentee ballots

SOUTHFIELD/LATHRUP VILLAGE — Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many voters are skipping the voting booth and opting for the comfort of their homes this primary election.

SOUTHFIELD/LATHRUP VILLAGE — Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many voters are skipping the voting booth and opting for the comfort of their homes this primary election.
On Aug. 4, voters in Southfield and Lathrup Village will vote on a variety of offices.
As of July 22, according to Southfield City Clerk Sherikia Hawkins, 20,418 absentee ballots had been issued, and 5,376 of those ballots had been returned. Hawkins said that’s about a 26% return.
Hawkins compared this year’s numbers to the primary of 2018, in which 21,239 ballots total were cast.
