Going for my first time to NYC this Friday thru Sunday. What to expect? What to visit? I know we're going for a play and ground zero but other than that who knows.

We're planning on going by train or...car.:twitch:
If you decide to drive, make sure your hotel has valet parking otherwise you will want to kill yourself. If "we" is only two people, consider taking the train - $139 round trip from Penn/Balt. You don't need a car in NYC and your daily parking fees will be anywhere from $40 to $60 a day.

Expect to be overwhelmed, especially if you've never been to a major city before. DC and Baltimore just don't compare. Ground Zero isn't that exciting, so you'll only spend a few minutes walking around and reading the plaques. If you're going with a shopping-inclined female, send her over to Century 21 (across the street from Ground Zero on Church St.). You may never see her again.

While you're down at the WTC, take a walk around Battery Park and maybe take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. It's only a few blocks south of WTC.

Spend half a day (or even a whole day) walking around Central Park - it's very cool there. And that's where all the rich people's apartments and hotels are so you can ooh and ahhh over how the other half lives. Exit the park on the west side and go west a block to Columbus Avenue, where they have excellent restaurants, little markets and it's just really neat there.

If you're going with friends, you MUST make the jaunt to CBGB's. Just make sure you go to the bathroom BEFORE you enter - theirs are...indescribable. :dead: Your folks probably won't appreciate it because it's dirty, loud and very "alternative", but even the bad bands are very good there.

We, personally, spend most of our time bar-hopping around Times Square. But next time we go (frigging daughter :burning:) I want to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Are you going with friends or family? If you're just going with friends, my recommendations might change

Time for a nap
BL, I took my first trip to NYC back in March. We spent a lot of time just walking around and seeing the sights. We went down Broadway, did some window shopping at 5th Avenue, saw Times Square, went to MoMA, and spent the afternoon at Central Park. There are some great restaurants around where we stayed (51st and Lexington) and I heard the Statue of Liberty is a "can't miss" (although we never made it down there).

Have fun!

Is Miss Liberty open to the general public yet?

BL... Maybe you'll wanna go up to the top of the Empire State Building...

Wow, thanks for the info! I'm going with my gf, her sister from Australia, her mom/dad, and maybe one of their friends. Do you know of any IMAX theatres?

There's one at the Natural History Museum up by Central Park, but that's the only one I know of.

That's pretty much what we do, too. Between drinks.

Like vrai said, train. Or, you could always do the bus. We've always had a blast on the bus trips. But there is NO WAY in HELL, I'd drive in N.Y.

After the old folks go to bed, sneak out with the gf and her sister and go hang out in the West Village - the freaks come out at night.

Take the ladies (NOT the Mom!!!) to Condomania. It's a sex toy shop in the Village with several hundred different styles of condoms that will have you :roflmao:

Get a drink at the Wreck Room (used to be the Scrap Bar and hasn't changed a bit) - there is the one and only time I've ever smelled crack (smells like burning Bandaids). It's not as seedy as CBGB's but it's pretty close.

Or you can just wander around and observe the gender-confused types. :jet:

Awesome! Any areas I should steer clear of besides the dark dead end alleys?

The first time I ever went to NYC, I was with some friends and we ended up at the Scrap Bar. I was all drunked up and I called my boyfriend and told him I was in a crack cave. He replied, "That sounds like fun, dear. Let me talk to Debbie or Fran, please. :tap:"

Shoot, that's where all the action is!

Supposedly Alphabet City (East Village when the north-south streets go from numbered avenues to Avenue A, B, C, etc.) is rough, but nobody accosted Larry and me when we walked around at night. Just act like you know what you're doing and nobody will bother you.

What an incredible place, too bad we couldn't stay longer. We (Aussie, her sis, her mom and I) started walking from Times Square and the first thing I noticed and was amazed at was the number of yellow taxi's. Those companies are making bank! The next thing I noticed was the number of advertisments each of us were soaking up. One can only imagine how many you are literally forced upon in Times Square alone.

I loved Times Square the most I believe, always something going on. During the day it was crowded but at night it was atleast 5 times that. The younger crowd and freaks came out during those hours as well. Before we left we got some NY style pizza from Villa pizzaria and people watched out the large horizontal running windows. I just loved how everything was lit up so beautifully.

We basically walked the greater portion of NYC. We started out, as I said, in Times Square and made our way thru Midtown, Flatiron district, The Village at Washington Square (neat little shopping area), SoHo, outskirts of Little Italy, into Chinatown and quickly back out:lol:, took the subway to the Brooklyn bridge/city hall, meandered down to the Financial district and Battery Park city where we saw the 9/11 site and finally caught a cruise that passed under the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges all to turn around and make a circle around the Statue of Liberty.

Everything was awesome and I plan on going back with friends in late December to early January.
