Wallace House

Lemuel Wallace Farm. Home for an African American farmer who owned about one hundred acres from 1909 until the mid-1930s. Lemuel Wallace's grandson, Woodrow Wallace, reported that the farmstead had once included a number of outbuildings and that water was carried up the hill from a spring. In 1990, the ACLT moved a log corn crib to this property from a farm on Barstow Road west of Prince Frederick. Members of the Wallace family live nearby and cultivated tobacco on the fields at the ACLT's south trailhead through the 2000-01 season. The photograph shows volunteers repairing the house. On ACLT-owned land.

Beautiful picture. It does have a melancholy tone because the buildings are deteriorating. It gives me a feel of what is going on in our country. I like to think it depicts a more peaceful and gentler time, but I am not sure if America has ever really had that time. Too bad Life Magazine is not still in publication, because your photos would be in it! Thanks for posting your work; it has been awhile. Post them more often!

Went for a trail walk yesterday and happened upon this house and corn crib. Pretty cool. Looking forward to going back and see the headstones from the 1800's along the Cemetery Trail.
