Just saw this flick at the Loews of Lexington Park, which of course is a dump. The seats were broken and we basically had to sit on the floor.:twitch:Besides that the film was o.k. The younger generation, of course, will love the flick more so than the older generation. I found Johnny Depp to be more weird and eccentric than Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka. Depp's jokes only led to a little island called goofy. I chose the original over the remake; Gene Wilder's character was more sarcastic with his jokes and therefore made the character more believable. I rate this film a 7 out of 10.

I was thinking of taking the little one to see it. He saw the original for the first time this weekend, and kept telling me that the beginning (where there is no happy singing and what-not) was just a commercial, and the movie would be on soon. He liked it once the kids got into the factory though, so I thought he'd like the new one (looks like an assault on the senses, right up his alley). It looks kinda creepy and scary though.

I kinda got the impression from the previews his acting was gonna be on the more looney side than Wilder's was...

now i'm thinking of Blazing Saddles....lol

But exactly what is a "believable" Willly Wonka...I don't remember the book...maybe Depp's portrayal is more like that in the book than Wilder????

From what I heard in an interview, Johnny Depp (or maybe Tim Burton) didn't want to step on Gene Wilder's toes (or try to top him and fail), so he took Willy Wonka in a different direction. The movie is supposed to be more like the book, but I don't know about the character, since I haven't read it either.

So maybe they are just "redefining" the character of Willy Wonka???

Who would want to see an old rehash of the original unless it was different anyways...

BTW I think I read "The Great Glass Elevator" and not the first original Willy Wonka...

I meant more believable as in your every day people person. Depp's character was just ghey and goofy whereas Wilder's character showed some human qualities such as sarcasm (throughout the film) and compassion (to Charlie at the end).

Agreed..

But could it be possible the book never intended the reader to relate Willy Wonka to a "normal" person? And just be over the top the entire time?

I also heard that they wanted people to be confused as to whether or not Wonka was a good guy or a bad guy. I don't know why I know this much about this dang movie.

I've never read the book but no matter how you look at Willy Wonka he is not a normal person, his entire factory, Oompa Loompa's, and way of life explains this much. However, If you dissect the movie I bet you can find tons of symbolism of Wonka trying to be the normal every day Joe.

So why would Wonka need to be more believable "as in your every day people person"?

In the first one I believe he is the good guy. He teaches all the rotten kids some moral lessons with his sarcastic jokes; the Oompa Loompa's reinforce this after each kid gets whacked.:yay:In the end the good ole chap get's the grand prize.

The newer version I think Wonka is also a good guy, although I don't get as much out of the movie as I did the original. Everything in the newer version is just plain out weird as most Burton films are. In the end all turns out well and Wonka is sorta the good guy in that he now has a family and allowed the po' family to stay in his factory, of course, after stalking the kid.

1) Director's choice.

2) Comedian's style.

3) It was the 1970's in film, not as much weirdness then than now in film. IMHO.

4) It was based on an actual candy company. Magic realism was brought out in full force and after seeing this flick every child wanted 'candy'!

5) With a believable people person character almost everyone can relate to him/her. (Ex: Look at Depp's character, could you easily relate to him? Would you want your kids around this guy?) P.S. He reminded me of M. Jackson.
