Short article (< 5 minutes); absolutely worth reading in its entirety:

Who said this (or something similar)? Would you guess Trump?
“Never before in all our history have these forces [the media and the opposition party] been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred.”

Actually those are the words of President Franklin Roosevelt in his last major campaign speech before the 1936 election. FDR didn’t refer to the media outlets that opposed him (like the Chicago Tribune) as “the enemy of the people.” Instead, he called them “the Tory press.” And what did he mean by the term “Tory”? Subtle, perhaps, but it meant they were anti-American.
This was merely the beginning of what became the standard playbook for the left, except instead of making the charge of anti-Americanism (the Left is obviously conflicted on this point), they defaulted to fascism and racism instead. By 1945 FDR was saying that a Republican return to power would represent a victory for the forces of fascism we were fighting against overseas. Nothing subtle about that charge.

Or how about this front page headline from the New York Times on October 25, 1948:

PRESIDENT [Truman] LIKENS DEWEY TO HITLER AS FASCISTS’ TOOL
CHICAGO, Oct. 25 — A Republican victory on election day will bring a Fascistic threat to American freedom. . .
I have a long catalogue of these kind of statements.
The list in the article is only partial, but eye-opening/good reminders of things/events I had forgotten about...

I think we can see a theme emerging. Liberals can dish it out, but can’t take it when someone like Trump—or Newt Gingrich before him—talks back.
Or #NeverTrumpers, for that matter.

The conclusion:
Let’s recur once more to Franklin Roosevelt in 1936 for an exit line: “But the resolute enemy within our gates is ever ready to beat down our words unless in greater courage we will fight for them.” Please remind me again of why Trump is uniquely ripping up our political “norms”?

Whats he's ripping up is the "Deal on Sunday, Sell on Moday" way of ignoring constiuents in favor of making laws for special interest groups, not the good of the country. Xmas trees comes to mind.

More exact, the special interest group is their own personal interest in gaining more power and influence.
Social media has given them a forum for self promotion that didn't exist in 1936.
You now have generations raised on the idea that if it feels good you should be able to do it, class envy and the government owes me.
Socialism / communism is being portrayed as Utopia
Very few understand the origins of our society, our laws, culture, etc. We stopped teaching real history decades ago, STEM and political correctness have watered it down. Combine that with the short attention span and you have a significantly dumbed down population.

But shutting down free speech isn't the media alone, it starts in academia, those not talking the correct line must be banned or shouted down.
Their words must not be allowed to corrupt the minds of the students.
Not that I support the Proud Boys or the KKK, but who shows up at who's parade with the plan to confront and shut it down?
News flash, if nobody came, there would be no story.
Who has been condoning harassment of their political opponents in public places, while they are out with family and friends?

Wow...that is some seriously revisionist sh!t right there!

So...just to point out what should be stunningly obvious...

  • there is a art to throttling your adversaries verbally. Trump sucks at it. He is about as pedestrian as one can be. There is no style to Trump. There is not art in his words. Christ half the time he is just a stuttering, blubbering tub of goo.
  • please name a president who didn't claim the media was against him.
  • do I really need to point out that an opposition party is SUPPOSED to be opposed to a President of a different party? (kinda wondering how that got by you and your author)
  • please name another President who called our news organizations "Fake" and "enemy of the people".
  • "Hoping the most had left" is a far different sentiment and intent than "return to your country of origin"

Cool, so tactics from 80 years ago are valid? Everything the dems did in the 20s and 30s should be audited?

I’m not so sure the republicans would want a similar audit, think about it

I will leave you alone, Truby, because I like you, but you, really, need to get a grip; so to speak. Who you defend now, can turn on you later.

You going to shoot me?
Way to take it out of context as the good liberal you are. You seemed to be on the fence. Now, I know you are not; you fell off on the left side. Sorry, I wasn’t there to save you. Anyway... I was saying protect yourself because you do not know what will happen; as in your 2nd Amendment right. That’s ok. I won’t be concerned about you again. Happy foruming. :)

I think you missed the point of the article. It was not at all the point of the article that others beforehand haven't done it; the point of the article was that the Dems (the ones screaming about all of this these days) were (also) the ones doing it in the past. "Good for the goose..." and all that.

As far as "SUPPOSED to be opposed," no argument there. Once again, I think you - in your haste to pounce - missed the over-arching idea of the piece and why I posted it.

I disagree with your assessment of Trump's abilities in throttling adversaries verbally. I think he's quite good at it. How would you rate your ability here on the forum (the only place I believe I'm acquainted with you)? Would you say it's good? Do you think others would agree with you? Or disagree? My sense is that you would think you're really good at it. And yes, I would disagree.

There's no value for me playing along with your "exact equivalence" gambit (in the last two bullets). It's not helpful here; it's not usually helpful, in general.

Finally, I don't think I've ever thought "Christ half the time he is just a stuttering, blubbering tub of goo." You're certainly think that about Jesus, but not my cup of tea.
