Wanting to buy a small stand alone humidifier and was wondering if anyone has a preference and why.

I have read the advantages and disadvantages of each but I want some personal reasons....

We first purchased a warm mist humidifier. I put it in my kid's room and came back to check on her later and it felt like a sauna in her room. I'm not sure if this is the norm or not. It was fairly cheap and didn't have a setting option...just on or off. BUT, I can see where the warm mist may work better in the winter.

We now have two cool mist humidifiers. Both my kids have nighttime cough issues- one seems to respond to it being on and the other hasn't had much improvement.

But I do recommend you pay a little extra for the ones that have settings like low, medium, and high. Also, I paid a little extra to get the ones that don't require you change a filter. Those bad boys get pricey.

Oh, and make sure you get one with a water tank big enough for the room you are using it in. It's a pain to change that thing often.

I have a bunch of kids around the house and they are all fascinated by things like that. Cool mist is safer in that case.

I meant to ask you about that in your furnace thread...

When you were talking about those high temps coming out, I knew it was going to be dry...

They can install humidifiers as part of the furnace...

Its actually much better than with the old furnace. It had a humidifier on it but the thing got filled with lime scale and probably bacteria. I really didnt know how to clean the thing. I figure a throw away one is probably better if it gets nasty I just chuck it instead of having an expensive unit on my furnace.

My problem is I have cracking skin on the tips of my fingers and its pretty painful so I figure I sleep 6 hours a day so its a good time to be in an enviroment that isn't too dry.
