Washers & Dryers

Time for a new washer and dryer. I’m going back to the agitator type. My current set is old and in the last few months have found that when doing the darks, a white type-film is left on the fabric, so I have to re-rinse them again, which is a PITA. I just don’t think that my clothes are as clean as they could be. Sistard had the exact same opinion about her non-agitator washer when she decided to replace hers.

Doing some research, I see there are some that have a removeable agitator which would come in handy for large loads like blankets and comforters. Although, I don’t do those frequently, would it be worth the extra expense.

Any suggestions?

Years ago, my suggestion would be Kenmore. But today, they are all made by only a couple of different makers, just changing the buttons and such. I'll bet if you did a pointed search you can find who makes what with what labels.

I have a pair of Kenmore that I bought 20 years ago, still going strong (jinx...) and have only had to replace an inlet valve on the washer. But it's a front loader and if you don't open the tray and front door when done, it will mold/mildew.

Thanks, I'll do that. My current one is a top loader, but I have always left it open, too.

My current machine, a Whirlpool, has a removable agitator. I seldom take it out, would have been just as well off with a stationary. It does allow me to fill the tub with water, I like that.

But it is deep. I had to go get one of those old people reacher-grabber to get clothes out of it.

And before the peanut gallery chimes in, my 6 foot tall husband can't easily reach the bottom, either.

Will a step stool be enough for me? I'm still 5'2".

I had that same problem with my last washer...clothes looked worse after they were washed. We ended up getting a Speed Queen. Pricey, but good reviews (both online and with people we knew). Made with less plastic parts so supposed to last longer. We'll see. We've had it about a yearish. Love it. Clothes actually look clean now. No fancy bells and whistles but I'll take basic if the clothes are actually clean.

Thank you for your input! I only do laundry for 1, not a household, but I just felt like my colors were getting dingier, even with the color bleach. I can't have that! 😂

Any chance the filter has a load of crap in it that cleaning/replacing might fix?

I seem to have good luck buying the cheapest washers and dryers. I have never had a set die, I just end up eventually buying another house and leaving the set when I move.

That said, I decided about a decade ago when I do buy another set I would get Speed Queen units.

Gilligan has a top load washing machine without an agitator. The few times I've used it, I say to myself "How does this work?!"
