Waterproof Cast...who knew!

As some of you may know, my 12 yr old daughter, injured her arm/wrist last week during soccer practice. We had to take her to the ER, straight from the field. The attending ER doctor diagnosed her with a sprain, but couldnt rule out a fracture.

Today, she had an appoinment with an Orthopedic....so did indeed fracture her wrist. At the growth plate. She will be in a cast for 6 week, and then re-xrayed to make sure things have healed.

We were given the choice for a standard cast, or a waterproof one. This was a no-brainer for me. Instead of the cotton padding on a traditional cast, this one has a gortex liner. She will be able to shower and swim, without having to wrap her cast. :yahoo:

I didnt even know they had waterproof casts, but I had no reason to find out, prior to this event anyway!

My husband had one for 6 weeks and the only problem is that when it gets wet it rubs funny. He felt like it was chaffing his skin...he put baby powder down it. Not sure if he was supposed to but he said it helped with the rubbing. He also used to blow dry it!!! Towards the end he was using a bag and duct tape to keep it from getting wet!!!

Sorry to hear about your daughter.

Yeah, the orthopedic told us about that. He said that if it starts to get uncomfortable (like rubbing or chaffing) to bring her back in, and it would be replaced. He said it could cause sores, if it continued to rub the skin like that. Hopefully, this will not happen.

Hubby never got sores...but he said it felt like he did. He would have LOVED to get it replaced...he's a sissy though so I am sure your daughter will be fine!

She's pretty tough. She's been walking around for over a week, with a fractured wrist, and still continued to attend soccer camp..:lmao:

My 9 yr old daughter had a waterproof cast put on her leg - 4 days before our cruise to the western caribbean.... AWESOME.... she was able to swim in the pool, swim in the gulf and alas take a real shower... best thing they ever made! Cost us $65 outside of the insurance but worth every penny! I'd heard about it few years ago so knew to ask for it. Made the cruise enjoyable for all. and she called it "CRUISE-BLUE".. bright blue cast... hasnt had any problems... was rubbing her baby toe, but i just snipped it back with scissors away from her toe...starting rubbing into her shin bone below the knee, but learned to walk with her foot turned out as the dr. told her she would have to. It has "torn" a little next to her toes, but it's ankle sprain/fracture so long way to go and too much thickness for it to crack/tear any more for it to be a problem.... It's been great since - 2 more weeks and she should be good to go! It's been 4 wks now...

waterproof casts for wrist fracture

I fell while playing tennis one week ago and fractured my wrist. I did not go to the ER because they don't cast much. My orthopedist put a waterproof cast on my arm. So neat that i don't have to concern myself with keeping the cast dry.

No problems so far and am going swimming later today.

My brother had a spinal fusion in 1970 and was in a torso cast for six months (after three months in a full body cast). The torso cast was waterproof, and he could swim in it.

I think that was called a Turtle Shell back in the day, and was made of plastic.
