Matthew 8:23Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.
24Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
24Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
This is just one of the things that show Jesus was more than just a man from Nazareth. The body of water they were boating across is subject to some really wild weather. High hillsides swoop down to a huge body of water. The air above is warmed by the sun.... while the current below is cooled by the depth of the water. Think weather front confined in a big bowl. It's a weather hazard ripe for a miracle.
A storm caused by the terrain in the area hit the boat.
Jesus was sleeping like a baby but the Disciples [mind you a few of them were fishermen] were afraid. God has used wild weather a lot in the Bible. Noah got the flooding. Jonah got the whale. Moses saw the wind blow the river into two piles and dry the river bottom. Lot got meteor showers or volcanic explosions. So, I give the Disciples a little credit for bravery. This was a storm that petrified fishermen.
Daddy was in the Navy... so until I moved to Arizona.... I have always lived near water. I've seen hurricanes and squalls. I've never seen the bay, or the ocean go from raging to calm in one swoop. Have any of you ever seen the weather just change in a heartbeat? Jesus spoke and the winds and the waves just sort of sat down! Apparently, the waves didn't subside.... they stopped. It was not just a storm passing.... it was a storm stopping. How often have you seen a storm stop?
Daddy was posted in San Juan, Puerto Rico before the base was closed. We lived in military housing at San Patricio. At the same time just about every day.... a cloud would form over the mountain nearby.... and then a rain cloud would appear... and then it would rain down one side of the street we lived on, and the other side of the street would stay dry. [you bet... I lived on the dry side] I use to sit on our stoop and watch the rain pass. I never considered it could just stop... like turning off a faucet.
Jesus made the wind and the rain stop. He turned off the wind and the waves. You try putting water in a bowl, get it rocking causing little waves in the water.... and then stop rocking.... the waves continue until they want to stop.... you're not Jesus. You can't turn off the wind or the waves.
Jesus could tell the wind and the water what to do. Neither has a soul. Both listened to His direction, according to Matthew the tax collector.
Think about it.... waves don't have ears!
