I definitely plan to move when I retire. Just don't know where yet, because I can't bear to be too far from my children.

But I don't trust these "scores" especially when they include stuff like "culture" "wellness" and "weather".
Ok, I don't like humid summers and cold winters. I also don't like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, hail, mudslides, volcanoes, forest fires, drought and earthquakes. I don't like alligators, mosquitoes, red ants, palmetto bugs, snakes, varmints and pigeons.

I couldn't care less about "culture". I don't know what I am supposed to "get" from culture, but after all of my years, I am not going to "get" anything from it now.

I want a place with reliable weather, low taxes, access to medical. a city not too far away. I want land to relax on, maybe garden in, I want neighbors who I can live with peaceably and I want to have friends in my old age.

That said, I will probably find a retirement community in the Sun Belt with my wife. Or perhaps the Pacific Northwest. If it weren't for the fact that I basically despise Canada, British Columbia wouldn't be too bad. Weather up there is mild. And if Washington state wasn't so liberal, I'd choose them, if only for the lack of state taxes.

S. Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia are on my radar. Originally thought about N. Carolina but their state politics have changed too much. Florida - same thing with the politics. I think they will be blue in the next presidential election. Plus it's too damn hot in Florida in July/August and too many damn old people who don't know how to drive.

Sam's list is similar to mine. I keep it on my phone and update as I think of things. Must be near (less than 2 hours) a major International airport. Decent medical facilities nearby. Predictable weather with no tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes. Venomous animals not wanted. A well stocked liquor store within walking distance. Oh yeah - reliable high speed internet for my porn.

My wife and I are likely the oddballs here, but we want to go where they have real winters. Not the cold damp excuses for winter we experience here.

I've said before that given the choice, I'd choose cold over heat. You can GET warm in the cold, but you can't "get cold" in the heat. Not without AC or a really deep cave.

I just hate waiting all year just to sit on my porch, walk out to the pool, walk outside. I hate cold days cooped inside - life is just too short.

Sadlly, most of the best places for taxes are cold. Like Pennsylvania.

The fact that yr definitely an oddball aside......my missus and I have zeroed in on Montana and Idaho as our most-desired places to end up. Both offer plenty of cold and snow.

And yet there are any number of people who move to Maryland specifically to retire. I actually know several people who've done that. Freaking nutters.

Anyone who is casting about to find a great retirement place, let me know. I have a list.

I've never heard of a one.... My family has been here since 1658 or thereabouts...almost all have left and we're not far behind.

Ive never understood why my mother and stepfather stayed when they both retired.
With the property they own in Breckenridge we all thought thats where main base would end up.

I'm with you, but not just for the winters. I hate hot humid summers like we have here. Going further south is not an option. Nor the desert.

I know I'm going to catch a ton of flack for this, but I'd like to head back up to LI, or further, New England. Very pleasant summers, and I don't mind snow. And Eastern Long Island is not NYC....
