Revelation 18:1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:
“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.
3 For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,
and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”
The commentary is quite interesting. Is Babylon a real city or just a symbol like the fig tree? That's way above my paygrade. I really don't know.
In the last chapter, seven Angels poured out all kinds of torment on the non-believers and the un-believers on earth. Seven Angels have been softening up the battlefield. Humans have sores. Humans are hungry. Humans are thirsty. Humans can't get a good breath of clean air. Humans have been scorched by the sun. Humans have been plunged into total darkness.... and then hailstones of fire were hurled at them.
All that money.... All those Idols... All those humans who think they are god.... All that is useless in total darkness. Try running in pitch dark.
I love that the Angel in these verses casts a sliver of light across the earth. It's hopeful. It's revealing. I wonder if it was as fearful as heat lightning that would set the world on fire? Maybe those who are stuck in the darkness think of it as "Oh man... now there will be fire!".
As I read this, this morning, I have been thinking of Gaza. I'm glad there's some kind of plan to keep the innocent humans from the direct hit of the battle. Hamas has been trying to piss of Israel. They fired rockets at Israel trying to penetrate that iron dome. Gaza... the city on the sea with so many humans to use as shields. Geeze... and not one of those bowls has been poured.
We ain't seen nothin' yet!
