We got the hack...

Bustem' Down

Took my dog to the emergency vet on the night of the 13th cause she was hacking up mucus. Turns out she got kennel cough from when I boarded her the weekend before. Got some medicine and the other dog has got it now so I got some medicine for him too. Kennel cough is some nasty stuff and the vet said that there must be a particularly strong strain going around because severl kennels have reported infections.

I just had my terrier boarded for a week and one of the requirements was that she was vaccinated against kennel cough. I thought all kennels required that in advance.

Yeah they do. I got them vaccinated the day I boarded them, but I guess either the disease was too strong or the shot didn't have enough time to take effect. I'm going to start getting them vaccinated a week or so in advance of boarding now.

They need to be vaccinated for bordetella a week or so BEFORE you put them in a kennel. The vaccine needs time to work.

Even with the vaccination it is no guarantee that your dog won't get sick. Kennel cough is like the flu in people. There isn't just one strain.
