From what I saw, I figured his significant other had paid to move up in the boarding line and he figured since he was traveling with her, he could get on the plane at the same time. Have seen that happen a few times at the gate. Or, one of a group pays to move up and then saves seats at the front of the plane, and being of the 'elite' class, they aren't told no.
